Term Paper Instructions

Purpose: In an effort to gain a more in-depth understanding of a facet of linguistics covered in this course, you will choose a specific component of linguistics to research and write a paper. You must be able to offer an in-depth explanation of your chosen topic and suggest ways to use that knowledge in your language education or professional writing. The goal is to research a facet of grammar or linguistics and apply it to your chosen professional field (teaching or professional writing)

Your term paper is split into 2 major assignments: Initial Draft and Final. Your Initial Draft must be a complete draft of the paper with all major sections completed. This will be examined and comments given to assist in the revision and final draft.

Your final submission is a revision of the initial draft taking into consideration the evaluations and instructor review.

Requirements

A. A 13–16 page paper on some aspect of syntax, phonology, or dialects. The topic you select should be of interest to you and applicable to your work or study. Sample topics include:

How to teach the article system Teaching conditional clauses

Teaching reported speech Passive voice Imperatives

Problems & issues with Yes/No questions Teaching Relative clauses

Phonology issues for 2LL Teaching pronunciation – e.g. Minimal pairs

Linguistics in Professional Writing Pros/Cons of Prescription vs description

B. Paper sections must include (and you may use them as headings when appropriate):

iii. Research on using/teaching

iv. Methods on teaching/using (might include examples/illustrations)

ii. Appendices (if applicable).

C. A minimum of at least 10 references from peer-reviewed articles.

D. Current APA, MLA, or Turabian formatting (whichever corresponds with your degree program).

Note: These are minimal requirements. To achieve a higher grade on this term paper, you must exceed these requirements. See the grading rubric for further details.

Problems seen in previous papers resulting in significant grade reductions include:

· Less than the required number of pages.

· Sources of information were not cited either within paper and/or in “Works Cited.”

· Sources listed in “Works Cited” were not cited within paper.

· Choppy/disconnected discourse, lacking conventional topic continuity.

· Less than the required number of sources.

· Few grammar illustrations/examples.

· Over-reliance on a few sources (thereby, in essence, making the paper more of a summary of someone else’s work than what should be novel integration of information, research, and conclusions).

· Little grammar content.

· Little integration of course content.
