ENGL 201 Discussion Board Forum Instructions

Upon completing Module/Week 1 and Module/Week 8 Reading & Study items, you will be well equipped to respond with a thread and at least 1 reply that show your ability to write analytically; follow standard composition and grammar usage; define and characterize each period of American Literature from its beginning through the Renaissance or Romantic periods; understand what it means to evaluate works as literary products of their age; discuss the unique literary style(s) of authors and draw comparisons among the various authors/texts studied; evaluate the varied provenance of American literature from a biblical worldview, particularly its religious, sociopolitical, economic, cultural, and literary derivations; determine the validity and logical consistency of claims and/or positions, using reading comprehension strategies when relevant; structure an argument or position using credible evidence and valid reasoning; compare and contrast the biblical worldview with a non-biblical worldview, evaluating the influence of assumptions and contexts on ethics and values; and relate critical thinking and ethics to participation in God’s redemptive work. (MLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; CT 1, 2, 3, 5).

Discussion Board Participation

For Discussion Board assignment, the instructor will present a topic that you must address in discussion with your classmates. Participation in the forum is fulfilled in two (2) ways: 1) You must create a thread in response to the provided prompt, and 2) you must reply to at least one (1) classmate’s thread.

For Discussion Board Forum 2, your thread must answer the discussion prompt in 200–250 words. This parameter helps to promote writing that is thorough, yet concise enough to permit your classmates to read all of the postings. As you compose your thread, use the citation format required by your degree program to cite all references to, or quotes from, external authors or sources. To let your instructor know which style of documentation you are using, write MLA, APA, or Turabian in the title of your thread as follows: Title – Citation style (e.g., “Christians and the Study of Literature – APA”).

After you have completed your thread, read at least one (1) classmate’s thread and submit a reply to it. For Discussion Board Forum 1, your reply must be 200–250 words. The total word count for Discussion Board Forum 1 (thread and reply) must be 500–600 words. For Discussion Board Forum 2, your reply must be 150–200 words. The total word count for Discussion Board Forum 2 (thread and reply) must be 350–450 words. Be sure to meet all deadlines and requirements. Carefully edit your posts and remember that this is a course that addresses composition; thus, your Discussion Board Forum posts will be graded on the following: content, organization, writing style, and grammar.

When composing your reply, note that statements such as “I like what you said” or “I disagree with your comment” do not count as replies. You must explain why you liked or disliked the thread by adding additional thoughts or ideas if you agreed with the author, or by providing alternative thoughts or ideas when you disagree with the author. Keep in mind that, regardless of whether you agree or disagree with your classmates’ opinions, you must be respectful and courteous in every interaction. Due Dates for Discussion Board Participation:

· For Discussion Board Forum 2, your thread is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module/Week 8, and your reply is due by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Friday of the same module/week.
