Understanding Cultural Differences and Growing in Difficulties

Jewish people were persecuted for centuries around world. Many people witnessed the chaotic and cruel war with Jews being persecuted and fierce fighting erupting between Germans and Poles during the second world war. The cultural misunderstanding led directly to the inhumanity of slavery and the horror of genocide. However, the German government finally began to acknowledge that the genocide occurred, and the Prime of German kneeled down in front of monument of Jewish victim to show how terribly sorry for them. Most of the time, Jews were always able to stand up and survive again. According to the novella Binti, the author Nnedi Okorafor presented a young girl Binti’s struggle experiences that played an important role in understanding cultural differences and tempering her willpower to survive in the terrible situation, and her ideas became matured a lot, the characters were even more determination.

Binti had strong determination and perseverance, and she dared to negotiate with Meduse in order to protect herself. Binti talked them down to accept the negotiation and volunteered herself as negotiator. When Binti was on her way to the destination Oomza University, where conflicts over cultural misunderstanding had broken out between human and alien tribe Meduse. Besides, Meduse attacked on the human ship and the massacred of human passengers after boarding. Binti was the only one to survive in the spaceship because she was holding the “edan” which was a cube of unknown metal with mysterious markings on it. Binti discovered “edan” was not only a weapon but also a translator that she could use it to protect herself and communicate with them. Later, she found that the major reason caused of these revenge that was Oomza University scientists assaulted a Meduse chief and displayed their stinger in the museum. Judging from their action of killing humans aboard the ship, their intention was to land on Oomza and embarked on a killing spree. In order to survive, Binti tried to negotiate with them and persuaded them to put down the hatred temporarily. Binti negotiated with Meduse that “Imagine what you will be. Imagine if my plan work. You’ll get the stinger back and none of you will have died. You’ll be a hero”(58). Although Meduse was hard to accept the negotiation, Binti’s idea seemed like a feasible plan. However, the Meduse chief asserted a claim that she had to abandon her edan first. She must willingly relinquish her ability to destroy them as well as her ability to understand them. Binti wanted to struggle for survive because did not have anything not to be possible to give up except life. She had great inner strength to get through the difficulty. Binti mentioned that “They are truth. They are clarity. They are decisive. I had to earn their honor and the only way to do that was by dying a second time”(66). Binti never considered the “cooperation requirement”to be ridiculous and unfair, however, Binti thought "compromise" would be needed on all sides. Although the compromise might be passive, it gave a chance for her and people in the Oomza University to survive. Binti states that “my mind cleared as the equations flew through it, opening it wider, growing progressively more complex and satisfying”(32). Finally, the stinger was returned and the crisis was over. When Binti went through hardships and decided not to surrender, she was in the half way to survive. All in all, the tribe Himba cultivated hero Binti who would fight.

Tribes Himba, Khoush, Meduse existed huge cultural misunderstanding, Binti attempted to embrace the cultural misunderstanding rather than holding the bias and prejudices. Khoush are the dominant majority culture in the world, however, Himba was minority and marginalized. In addition, Binti was the only Himba on the ship because their tribe was small, private, and obsessed with innovation and technology. Binti’s parents also had cultural misunderstanding with Khoush, they expressed deep distrust of the famous Oomza University, whose human students and faculty are all Khoush. Khoush may have been born into a privileged society and utterly entitled. Binti mentioned that “He looked at me for a long time, the others in my group staring at me like a rare bizarre butterfly”(21). In addition, Khoush and Meduse had conflict over cultural beliefs, their rage came from the shame of emasculation. However, Oomza University was the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy, Khoush in the Oomza University displayed the “stringer” in the museum to explore instead of provoking the tribe Meduse. When Binti and Meduse first landed in the destination, they gradually changed their mind that the Oomza university was as inclusive society in the galaxy, all of the students and faculty were focusing on research and technology. All thoughts of cultural misunderstanding and rage were in the back of their mind. All the faculties with a wealth of knowledge and welcomed and expected their coming. Although they heard Meduse arrived in the land, they also wished Meduse to stay behind as the first Meduse student to attend the university. However, Meduse mentioned that “Who’d have thought that a place harboring human beings could carry such honor and foresight”(79). Indeed, these three different tribes still existed the cultural misunderstanding in their history, but they also felt the importance of forbearance and conciliation. When they were in major misunderstanding or a chronic problem, Meduse and Binti kept in promise to solve the misunderstanding rather than leading conflict. Meanwhile, Khoush and staffs in the university kept enthusiastic with spreading knowledge. Indeed, the key to avoid different cultural misunderstanding was mutual understanding and tolerance.

Family factors were significant to affect Binti’s mind and made her heart mature a lot. Binti is a mathematical genius, when she was 16, she left home against her parents’ aspirations to go to the Oomza university. Binti sneaked out of her house and got on the ship, Binti mentioned that “I was leaving in the dead of night and they had no clue” (10). However, when Binti witnessed brutal killing by Meduse during the journey to the university, she has gradually understood that why her parents were a conservative and traditional and firmly against Binti to leave the earth. In addition, there were some differences between her people and dominant culture, her people were not pastoral but were clans of specialist artisans with valuable mathematical skills. Once Binti went into this very dangerous situation, her family members’s words and their actions encouraged her to enable to survive when she felt exhausted. Binti mentioned that “I was born with my mother’s gift of mathematical sight. My mother only used it to protect the family, and now I was going to grow that skill at the best university in the galaxy”(32). Her family members had been motivating her to be stronger and increasing her faith to survive. In addition, Binti was not only just the daughter but also the representatives of her gifted parents and of the Himba. She was the sole representative of the human species, and she was the only the “ambassador" to negotiate between the Meduse and the entire population of Oomza University. When Binti faced the danger and almost was attacked by Meduse, she used to remember her family and her people’s teach that Himba would never give up the belief to life. Binti mentioned that “I am Binti Ekeopara Zuzu Dambu Kaipka of Namib, and I had become a master harmonizer by the age of twelve”(31). In fact, most of what Binti learnt from their family were not taught on purpose. However, Binti inherited from her family’s not only genetic brain but also a strong heart.

Throughout the novella Binti, the author Nnedi Okorafor described the conflicts between three different cultures and the cultural misunderstandings caused by bias and barriers.
