Essay IV: A View of a Significant Issue

Reflecting upon the semester you spent with your topic, you may have changed your own views upon the issue you chose or deepened your own awareness of its significance. Sustainability is a very current topic in all areas of our lives, and your research has led you to some new frontiers. How should your particular topic be viewed by others? Keeping your general audience in mind, introduce your topic as if you were presenting this for the first time to a whole new audience. Provide counterargument as well as various perspectives, but spend most of your time developing your position on why this topic matters and what is currently happening in this area. Again, you don’t need to actually solve the issue, although you may have an argument for that. You may be arguing that it is important that we work for a solution. But you need a clear argument, deep significance, and fresh, new support to supplement your previous research.

While you may use information from your previous essays, don’t just copy and paste them together. There must be something new and fresh about this essay to justify a new essay grade. This is not just a revision of an old essay. See your Composition and Rhetoric Guide (and class notes) for specific details about this paper and the requirements for sources. Also, get help with organizing your essay to fit the requirements for Essay IV. This paper will only be in MLA, and help, of course, is available in your Seagull handbook, the mla.org website, Purdue OWL, the MSU library website, the Write to Excellence Center, and your workbook. There is no reason to turn in a poorly-formatted essay, and certainly no excuse for plagiarism.

Bonus: if you request a tutor to let me know that you worked with them at the writing center (online, of course) AND you submit all required materials on time, you will receive a 5 point bonus on your essay. You may visit the writing center more than once to work on your paper, but the 5-point bonus is offered for only one of those visits. If you wait until the last minute and cannot get an appointment, there is no way to make this up.

Remember: make sure your Works Cited page is part of the same electronic document as your essay so it all uploads smoothly into Turnitin. Do not “orphan” your Works Cited page. It is on a separate page from your essay, but is on the same electronic file.

Get assistance from me or the WTEC tutors if you have questions or concerns. And don’t wait until the last minute.

Source requirements:

6 sources minimum (10 maximum)

· 4 scholarly secondary sources (at least 3 must be academic journal articles)

· 2 primary sources (1 may be a creative source)

· Other sources may be as listed in previous assignments, but not as substitutes for the above required minimum.

Other Essay IV requirements:

· 2,000-word minimum length (NOT counting the Works Cited page).

· MLA format (get assistance from WTEC if you need. Essays will not be accepted if not in correct format).

· Must submit to correct links on time. Due date: Friday 16 April 2021.
