Cause and Effect Essay (Essay IV)
Cause and effect, like other patterns of organization, helps us make connections between concrete things/events and concepts. We are driven to understand reasons, and we search for apparent results. Write a cause and effect essay based on one of the prompts listed below. Follow the instructions given in class (for example, ONLY use the source I assigned to you. NO other sources used for this one AT ALL). Be sure to have an argument: why does this matter? This paper is not a review about the article. I already know what the article is about. This is an argument about what you believe about the topic and why you believe this (support with evidence). Use something from the article to either support your belief or as a counterargument. You may also use personal experiences and observations plus common knowledge. You must include one direct quote from your source and at least one paraphrase from it (you may have more paraphrases, but only one or two quotes). Be sure to cite both quotes and paraphrases. Follow all the rules regarding thoroughly-marked rough drafts, MLA format, 750-word minimum count, and specific examples to illustrate your points. Essay is due Monday, 6 November.

1. Libraries have traditionally been seen as being temples to learning. They included not only a wealth of information in the form of books, visual arts, and other media (sound and video recordings, et cetera), but librarians themselves were valuable resources. More than just being caretakers of the libraries’ contents, they served as guides in how to use the resources. In the modern world, have libraries remained relevant or important to our society? How have changes in society (the economy and/or the global market, technology, changing demographics, new aims in education, and other trends) affected libraries, and how have libraries responded in order to continue to serve their communities? Why does this matter? You do not need to address all of these, and you may think of other factors that have caused libraries to change their services in some way. Keep focus, and be sure to show significance.
2. What is the role of technology in Information Literacy? To stay focused, you may wish to choose just one particular form and examine its effects on the way we gather information, evaluate it, and share it. You might consider what role critical thinking plays in the way we use the internet itself, for example. Or you may choose to focus on social media, cell phones, movies, video games, or some other form of technology that applies to this topic. Be sure to focus on the role it plays in Information Literacy, and show why this matters (significance).
