Overview The purpose of this assignment is to help you investigate and analyze a professional organization so that you can report on the ways that organization helps support disciplinarity in your sub-discipline for Mini-project #2.

Before you begin, I suggest you read through the guidelines for Mini-project #2: How Your Professional Organization Shapes Disciplinarity. That will give you the context you need to complete this worksheet, which is designed to help you gather the data you’ll need to complete Mini-project #2.

Assignment To complete the worksheet, please follow the steps below and record any relevant information. Copy and paste the Worksheet #4 Data into a new document and submit that as your assignment.

Before you begin conducting research, take a look at the Worksheet #4 Data section at the end of this assignment so you have an idea of what kinds of information you’ll want to collect as you complete the worksheet. Step 1: Choose a Professional Organization Look for a professional organization to examine. I recommend that you look at a few different websites, keeping in mind the kinds of data you’re looking to collect, rather than choose the first organization you find.

To find related professional organizations, use the search terms such as “associations,” “professional organizations,” and “societies,” along with your sub-discipline. Examples: “associations and marketing,” “technical writing and professional organization,” and “economics engineering and societies.”

Also check your Library Infoguides to see if it has any professional organizations listed. (Some do.)

Step 2: Research the Site

Once you’ve selected your organization and recorded its name and URL, investigate the site, looking for the following:

• Mission: What is the mission of the organization? • Membership: Who is the organization’s target membership? Researchers and

academics? Students? Teachers? Industry/trade professionals? Enthusiasts? o Does the organization offer different membership levels? How much does

membership cost and what does a membership grant? • Does the organization offer educational services/programming? If so, please provide

a few examples. • Does the organization sponsor conferences or conventions?

o If so, what are they? How frequently do they meet? Are they regional? national? international?

• Does the organization offer awards or grants? Is so, what are they and who is eligible?

• Does the organization have a job bank (specialized "want ads" for people in your field)?

• What types of publications does it provide for its members? Many associations have one or more scholarly journals and a number of trade publications (newsletters, bulletins, or other non-peer reviewed sources of professional information), and some publish books or book series.

o List the titles of the journal, trade publications, and books series. If they don’t seem to publish book series but do publish books, note that.

• Does the organization sponsor a citation system? If so, what is it. (Most organizations do not.)

• Does the organization have a social media presence? If so, what platforms do they use and how do they use these platforms?

• Does the organization have a professional code of conduct? If so, list them and describe some of their primary/major concerns.

• Does the organization provide other kinds of resources or information about the sub-discipline not addressed above?

looked at. • Name of your chosen professional organization and its URL • Research data: Working through the bulleted list under Step 2, record any

information that you find. If you don’t find anything for a bulleted item, make note that you don’t find anything.
