This reflective essay is worth 30% of your marks.
Word limit: 1500
Due Date: Midday Wednesday 15th July (Week 7) via Turnitin
This reflective piece of writing requires you to write an essay on the skills and opportunities that need to be identified and achieved in order to have a successful career as a humanitarian engineer. In the essay you should reflect on your own strengths and how these align with the skills required in Humanitarian Engineering. The reflection needs to focus on how your understanding has changed, or not, of the importance of geography and politics and their interactions with engineering and specifically Humanitarian Engineering. Your essay should be informed by your own reading, the guest lecturers in the course, and the workshop activities. The essay should reference any external sources that you have used using the Harvard referencing system.
Marking Criteria The reflections will be assessed according to:
• Clarity of reflection, • consideration of related external material as evidence, • depth of reflection and relevance of discussion, • awareness of underlying assumptions, • writing quality and presentation.
The assignment should be professionally presented including in-text citations, bibliography and editing for spelling and grammar. Late submissions will lose 10% of the maximum marks per day. This assignment relates to the following learning outcomes (see course profile):
1. Analyse the skills and attributes required to work in humanitarian engineering contexts 2. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and ethical behaviour
The following rubric indicates the attributes that will be assessed during marking.

Clarity of reflection (10%)
No reflection is made (0 marks)
Some reflection is made (0.5 marks)
A reflection is made but with no explicit personal contribution (1.0 marks)
A reflection is made with a personal response to what has been learnt (1.5 marks)
A thoughtful and reflective response is given to experiences, opinions, events or new information (2.0 marks)
Depth of reflection and relevance of discussion (25%)
There does not appear to be any attempt at reflection and mostly contains raw observations that are not linked to learnings (0 marks)
Some attempt at reflection made (0.5 marks)
An observation is made and reflected on. Learnings as a result of the observations and reflection are described (1.0 marks)
Several in- depth observations are made and reflected on. Learnings as a result of the observations and reflection are described for each. (1.5 marks)
Each observation is clearly explored from a personal perspective and the realisations and potential implications for future behaviour are defined. (2.0 marks)
Consideration of related external material as evidence (25%)
There does not appear to be any effort collecting and considering external materials (0 marks)
Some external material considered but not referenced (0.5 marks)
Some additional reading and observations are incorporated and are related to topic. References incorrectly used. (1.0 marks)
Several sources of external material are incorporated correctly and used coherently within the personal reflection (.15 marks)
The external material reported is integrated well within the reflection, referenced correctly, considered at a personal level and this consideration is linked to other course learnings. (2.0 marks)
Awareness of underlying assumptions (25 %)
No underlying assumptions are identified or referred to (0 marks)
Underlying assumption(s) considered but not clearly stated (0.5 marks)
Underlying assumption(s) given but not incorporated into personal reflection (1.0 marks)
Underlying assumption(s) given and used to build personal reflection (1.5 marks)
Underlying assumption(s) have been detailed, are related (i.e. not forced) to reflection and are considered with respect to future plans or actions. (2.0 marks)
Writing quality and presentation (15 %)
Reflections far too short or long, many spelling and grammatical errors, poorly presented (0 marks)
Reflections too short or too long and/or with numerous spelling and grammatical errors, poorly
