ENG 315 – Professional Communications |
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course concentrates on communicating effectively in business and in the professions. A range of business and professional documents are prepared based on the concepts of purpose and audience, and formal written assignments are researched and developed. The course focuses on techniques for clearly, concisely, and persuasively communicating information in speaking and in writing. The course emphasizes developing skills in verbal communication and in planning, organizing, and delivering oral presentations.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
Required Resources
Lehman, C. M., DuFrene, D. D., & Walker, R. (2015). BCOM7. Boston, MA: Cengage Learning.
Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010, 2013, or 2016
Required Tools
Must have access to audio/video recording equipment (a microphone/webcam, camcorder with digital file capabilities, or cell phone with a high-quality camera/microphone) to complete Assignment 4 (Week 8).
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Plan, create, and evaluate professional documents.
2. Write clearly, coherently, and persuasively using proper grammar, mechanics, and formatting appropriate to the situation.
3. Deliver professional information to various audiences using appropriate tone, style, and format.
4. Learn communication fundamentals and execute various professional tasks in a collaborative manner.
5. Analyze professional communication examples to assist in revision.
6. Develop presentation skills for use in the professional environment.
WEEKLY COURSE SCHEDULE
The standard requirement for a 4.5 credit hour course is for students to spend 13.5 hours in weekly work. This includes preparation, activities, and evaluation regardless of delivery mode.
