Subject: Personal/Professional Introduction
The purpose of this memo is to introduce myself to both you and my ENG 302 classmates, to talk about my prior writing experience, and to outline my expectations for this class. In addition, I will outline my current professional goals and the steps I plan to take in order to achieve them.
Growing up in Southern California, it’s only natural that I love the water. Ever since I can remember weekends revolved around surfing, water skiing, and swimming, with a healthy dose of beach volleyball thrown in. Both of my parents were competitive surfers and my only sibling, an older sister, went to college on a volleyball scholarship and is currently attempting to break into the professional beach volleyball circuit. While I was on my high school’s swim and volleyball teams, a serious knee injury ended any aspirations I might have had to follow their paths.
In high school I took Advanced Placement English classes every year, and always received an A. That led me to believe, perhaps naively, that I was an excellent writer. The Human Event class here at Arizona State taught me otherwise. The first semester was a struggle for me. In high school, my teachers encouraged me to write creatively and to include in the essay anything and everything I knew about the subject. The same went for exam questions. The more I rambled the more positive feedback I received. In the Human Event, I was forced to write with more focus, to be more succinct, to retrain myself. Thankfully I eventually figured out what my teacher wanted and while I only received a B+ in the first semester of the class, my second semester grade was an A and I am now a writing tutor for students in Barrett, the Honors College, helping them to write their Human Event papers.
In ENG 302, I hope to continue towards brevity in my writing, to learn to communicate complicated ideas in a concise manner, and to also learn about the types of writing employed in a business/professional setting. In addition, while the idea of writing collaboratively makes me slightly uncomfortable, as I’m pretty particular when it comes to my work and also tend to be assertive when it comes to working with other students, I also understand that collaboration is a key component of not only business writing but of business itself. My goal is to eventually work as a financial analyst, either on Wall Street or for a mutual fund company. Toward that end I am dual majoring in Finance and Accounting, with a minor in Mathematics. This summer I will be interning with Janus Funds in Denver. Hopefully the following summer I will have an internship with American Funds in Los Angeles. A friend of my father’s is a Vice President there and while the position is not guaranteed, it is at least a foot in the door. If everything goes according to plan, after graduation I will work for American Funds and work my way up the ladder. Obviously plans are subject to change but as long as I have a job in the Financial sector and am able to live within a reasonable distance of the Pacific Ocean, all will be good. Thank you for time.
