ENG2102: Review Analysis Essay (1500 words- 5 pages)

FORMAT: Typed and double-spaced in MLA format.

TOPIC: As we have read, formal analysis dissects the complex synthesis of cinematography, sound, composition, design, movement, performance, and editing as they are orchestrated by screenwriters, directors, cinematographers, actors, editors, sound designers, and art directors, as well as the many craftspeople who implement their vision. As such, the meaning of a movie is expressed through the complicated interplay of its many formal elements (Gocsik et al. 3).

Essay #2 is all about the Formal Analysis of one of the films we have screened during the second portion of our class: From Dusk till Dawn (1996), Machete (2010), Enter the Dragon (1973), Love Death and Robots (2019), Always Be My Maybe (2019), Afro Samurai (2009)

In this essay, you will go beyond the in-depth scene analysis you did in Essay #1 and locate an analytic topic—a principle or element that makes a general statement about the way something within the film works (a focus on the absence of sound in No Country for Old Men (2007) and how it adds to the evil of Chigurh).

Systematically apply the analysis in each of the three body paragraphs.

This essay is to be devoted to the analysis of film elements and how they coincide with your topic. It will include specific scene analysis to coincide with your topic. Your analysis should include specific film jargon informed by the content from the readings we’ve covered thus far.

Your topic is to be informed by ONE scholarly article located in the SF Library Database.

You will include direct content from your scholarly article (and any content from our readings) to support your formal analysis.

Your essay should be structured thusly:

Do not use the movie’s title as your essay title.

1. Introduction- begin with broad summative sentence that includes director and title (date). The rest of the intro should provide specific context to lead the reader to your thesis. *Thesis should be clear and concise—I should be able to read it by itself and know what your topic is about. (1/2 page)

2. Summary of scholarly article—include author’s full name and the title of the article. (1/2 page)

3-5. Critical analysis of film with specific awareness to your topic with support from your

sources (utilize/synthesize specific content from the scholarly articles in each body

paragraph to support your analysis. Include starting time and ending time of each of

the scenes (in parentheses) you discuss (11/4 page for each body paragraph)

6. Conclusion (1/4 page)

WRITING TASKS:

1. Follow standard conventions for analysis.

· Assume the reader has seen the movie and read the published review.

· When you reference relevant contributor(s) in your paper, whether the director, certain actors, cinematographer, etc., use each person’s full name in the first reference. For subsequent references, use the person’s last name only.

· Use present tense and past tense following these conventions:

· Use present tense when introducing quotations from the review.

· Use present tense when summarizing the events of the movie—any process that “occurs” every time you watch the movie.

· Use past tense for events that occur prior to the beginning of the movie.

· Use past tense for one-time events related to the film production.

· *The last two are set in history/the first two are set in the context of the film.

· Italicize the movie’s title and include the date the first time you reference it: Memento (2000).

2. Format your paper using standard MLA guidelines for papers.

· Set your margins, line spacing, etc., following standard conventions.

· At the end of your essay, include a Works Cited section in MLA format:

· Include an entry for the movie specifying the version/format that you watched.

· Include the review.

3. Proofread carefully for grammar errors. Grammar check and spellcheck are notoriously bad.

ASSESSMENT: Grades will be on the following rubric. Each of the domains is described in terms of specific indicator of achievement level.
