Final Project Essay

#itsokay ( No body Shaming)

The issue I am trying to overcome is body shaming in men and women, but particularly in women. Throughout the years body image has always been in issue in women and men. Women face being shamed for being overweight, too Curvy, having too much cellulite or stretch marks, while men face being very weight, too skinny, or having stretch marks which could come across as feminine. Since body image is such a high focus point in the entertainment industry , younger generations began to become self conscious of how they look and how much they weigh. The needs that are not being met is that women and men are tearing one another down based on their looks and destroying one another self esteem or confidence. No one is taking notice of this and it can impact a person's mental and physical health.

The root cause of this is that society has made an image for what women should look like and what they shouldn’t look like. Again , through the years technology has advanced for women to get fat reduction to get rid of unnecessary fat or to help get rid of cellulite and creams that supposable help get rid of cellulite or stretch marks. There are thousands of women who are trying to look like this image society created and are not embracing themselves. The thought bubbles goes blogger Hollie Broadhead talked about why being fat is an insult , because society is become more associated with how a women may look and they will then from their opinion on her looks. Broadhead had then stated that society is basically surveil of the fittest. Broadhead had stayed later in the paragraph that there are five measures of economic status, and how it affects you, “ 5 measures of socio-economic status' were assessed: 1) age completing full time education, 2) degree level education, 3) job class, 4) annual household income and 5) Townsend deprivation index (social deprivation scores). The results demonstrated that most overweight women and shorter men were less successful opposed to taller and thinner individuals, particularly in more developed countries such as the USA and UK.” . This shows that your looks and appearance does affect you socially and economically. Health and beauty has become on of the top standard not only in America but also across the world. A healthy lifestyle” or more drive throughout the day are more outgoing, and are aware of their surroundings when it comes to work, communication, and their status. However, for people who are not like an individual that I listed in the sentence prior , they are more likely to be sluggish, eat constantly throughout the day because of stress and are more likely to be depressed and not social. Everybody is different and they can not afford to live like other people if not they simply are going through things that they are not able to take care of themselves.

Because of how society such a strong hold on body image younger generations are starting to worry about their body image. Many women may look in the mirror and talk aloud or look at themselves in dissapoint , which may allow their daughters to see it and try not to gain weight or look like their mother in the fat future. This gives them a constant stress and they may develop an eating disorder. The body image therapy center gives shocking statistics that prove soi=society and the entertainment center are giving idea to younger views how women should look and what they should or may do in order too look good. The body image center states that 81% of ten year olds are afraid to gain weight and 9% of nine year olds vomit to lose weight. There is also 15% of young women who have an eating disorder. Lyla allen who had written an article titled, The “ perfect woman's society’s ugliest issue , she talks about the lunch food and its extreme change in food choices, how industries photoshop their pictures and etc. However, she made a clear point that society tries to get celebrities to show how unhealthy this generation and tries to politely yet blunty to get people to be active and eat healthier and calling parents horrible because their kids are unhealthy. Allen stated “ Even Michelle Obama, though well-intentioned, works to make us feel fat and unhealthy in her ridiculously easy advice to kids eating healthy and staying in shape. We feel stupid so we diet. We feel tired so we eat. And between those two extremes, we get the idea that body image is always the most important pursuit in life.”This quote from the article proves that even good intentions can have bad responses. Michelle Obama was an activist from healthy eating and being active, however many individuals believed that it was because of “ bad parenting” and that we aren’t doing what is right for children. Because of all the media for healthy eating we tend to watch other people and compare our habits. Once we realize the differences, we try to eat healthier, workout , do yoga, and try to be productive. It is a silly thing to do to try and be like others and not ourselves.

Parents are being shamed for the habits they are setting for their kids, children are getting eating disorders for wanting to be skinny, and men and women downgrade and body shame one another based on their looks and are minimizing the others confidence, self esteem, and their mental and physical health. If society didn't have this image for how women and men should look there wouldn't be major eating disorders, or having women and men turn their backs on one another just to feel better. I want women and men to know that it is okay for themselves to be accepting of their body and to love themselves. How can you be expected to love someone else if you don't love yourself? Self love always come first. No matter what anybody says you are perfect the way you are and it is okay to be yourself and to have stretch marks, curves, and cellulite. The message that I want to get out is that its okay to be curvey or chunky. Its okay to have cellulite. Its okay to have stretch marks. Everyone is perfect in their own and unique way. There is no such thing as perfect. I want my audience to know that with girls or men who are not accepting of their body and simply saying that it is okay to be happy with the skin you're in. There is no need for all this expensive technology or cream to help you perfect yourself. I would be focusing more on social media. I would be using picture of celebrities , myself, or others if it is okay with them. If I wanted to go out into the world I would happen to use instagram. Instagram is a place to show numerous of pictures and videos of oneself. I want women to know it is okay to have flaws and to embrace it. Leading. It is leading because I am trying to make a change for self acceptance like many other leaders in social media.I would use it to try and get woman of different colors shapes and sizes to join and use their personal stories to help spread the world. I would use media as my biggest source starting with instagram and then going on to youtube. Trying to expand my story and the hashtag. I would not know the cost, but a simple camera to help record with the right equipment and people can go a long way .
