ENG 1A

Essay 1

ROUGH DRAFT DUE: May 1st

FINAL DRAFT DUE: May 6th

Prompt:

So far in class, we have focused on addressing what “they” say to form your own argument—what “you” say. For this essay, choose one of the five articles we have read so far (“Shakespeare’s Sister”, “Christmas to Me”, “Confessions of a Juggler”, “Flirting With Justice”, or “Take Teen Girls Seriously”) to address the “they” say of your essay. Next, address what “you” say. Do you agree with the main argument of the author? Why or why not (give at least two examples)? Draw on personal experience or anything we have discussed/watched in class.

Example Thesis:

“In ‘Christmas to Me’, author Harper Lee suggests that it is okay to take a handout to get ahead in life. I disagree with Lee’s main point, because taking a hand out is a form of cheating, and success is much more enjoyable when you work hard for it.”

Odds and Ends:

1. Your essay is due by 11:59PM on May 6th. Late essays will be docked half a grade, and essays will not be accepted after three days past the due date.

2. Emailed or printed essays will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made.

3. Please double space and use 12pt font.

4. Your essay needs to be 2-3 pages. Remember, 2 FULL pages is the minimum to receive a passing grade.

5. Include both in text citations AND a work cited page. Omission of either will result in an automatic “F” on the essay.

Grading Breakdown:
