Things Fall Apart Rough Draft and Working Thesis Assignment

In the novel “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe, there are different characters. Every

character in his/her ways makes the story complete and meaningful. This is as a result of the

diverse roles that they play and when all these roles are combined together, they make the novel

meaningful and classified as one of the most famous fictional novels. Characters names used by

Chinua Achebe in the novel include; Okonkwo, Nwoye, Ezinma, Mr. Brown, Ikemefuna, and

Unoka. In the Novel, Okonkwo is the main character and seems to play a major role in shaping

the direction and mood of the novel (Foley, 2001). This is something that makes the novel

interesting and intriguing.

Focusing on Okonkwo, he is an emotionally unstable person. There are different issues

and challenges that Okonkwo faces throughout the novel that can be said to be behind his

unstable emotions (Fardous, 2017). The challenges are evidently caused by other characters in

the novel playing major and minor roles as they have a direct impact on Okonkwo being the

main character (Varadharajan, & Ramesh, 2016). The reason is that every character in the novel

or a movie needs the support and completion from other characters. Despite Okonkwo being

partly good in terms of character, beliefs, and intentions, he ended up as a tragic hero

(Abd-Rabbo, 2019). This essay shall hence focus on analyzing Okonkwo’s character and

mapping how he a tragic character in the novel. To understand Okonkwo’s character, the main

focus shall be his weaknesses like anger and pride that overpowered his good intentions and

personality as well as the contribution of other characters in making Okonkwo a tragic character.
