Prompt for Paper 1: Rhetorical Analysis

For this essay you must construct a rhetorical analysis for one of the two texts from this unit. Your goal is to determine the effectiveness of the piece by breaking down its use of rhetorical strategies. You must first note the main argument of the text then identify three of text’s most important sub-claims. Then you will need to analyze the way in which those sub-claims were constructed and supported in order to determine the effectiveness. When determining effectiveness you must consider the rhetorical strategies covered in class (such as amplification, anaphora, tone, logos etc.). Make sure you address the text’s audience when considering effectiveness. Remember, you are evaluating its effectiveness towards its target audience, not whether or not you liked it.

Paper Requirements: – You should closely study a minimum of three rhetorical strategies. – The essay should be around 1,200 – 1,800 words (4-6 pages) – The essay must be typed in MLA format (double-spaced, one inch margins, pg. numbers, etc.) – There must be a works cited page. – Make sure to proofread your essay.
