Turbo Charger VS Super Charger

One of the most common questions people ask when they want to buy a car or modify the ones they already own is which route to take, turbo or supercharger? The answer is not a simple one since they all have special and different characteristics. A supercharger is defined as a device (as a blower or compressor) for pressurizing or increasing the volume air charge of an internal combustion engine above atmospheric pressure or over that which would normally be drawn in through the pumping action of the pistons (How Superchargers Work). On the other hand, a turbocharger is defined as "a centrifugal blower driven by exhaust gas turbines and used to supercharge an engine" (Turbocharger Fundamentals). Sanjay Salomon is a writer who loves to write about cars and other automotive-related stories and in his article Supercharger vs. Turbocharger, he tries to answer the question turbo or supercharger by outlining the differences between the two. This paper is going to analyze how the author wrote the article, his techniques, claims, his audience, what he hoped to achieve with the article and whether he achieved it. Comment by Tutor: Consider revising into a clearer and less colloquial phrase that expresses what this “route” is exactly so the layman reader will not be confused. For example: is this “route” to improve their vehicular choices? Consider also specifying precisely the options as, for example, choosing to add a turbocharger or choosing a brand-new car with a supercharger. Comment by Tutor: Revise into a colon Comment by Tutor: As, later, you use “turbocharger”, introduce the term as “turbocharger”, here, and use the term consistently throughout your paper Comment by Tutor: Throughout your paper, specify vague pronouns such as “they”, “them”, “their”, “that”, “this”, etc. for specificity. For example: what does “they” refer to in this sentence? Comment by Tutor: Specify how such “characteristics” will affect the car selection or modification choice Comment by Tutor: Specify, in a follow-up sentence, how the supercharger directly affects a driver ordinarily; precisely, what is the benefit of the supercharger in comparison to the turbocharger? Does a supercharger make the car smoother to drive? Comment by Tutor: Consider specifying who “defines” a “supercharger” Consider removing “defined as” from the sentence to trim down wordiness and avoid this specificity need Comment by Tutor: For academic formality, remove parentheses when presenting aside information. Instead, use a comma phrase. For example, “Green Lantern, a popular DC Comics super-hero character, was created . . .” In this case, consider beginning the comma phrase with “such” Comment by Tutor: Consider specifying these devices as being related to cars. For example, a “car compressor” Comment by Tutor: For technical clarity, add “used” before “for” Comment by Tutor: Consider revising to clarify this second “or” component of the device Comment by Tutor: For an MLA paper, use the article’s page number over article title, if available. If not, use the author’s last name. Comment by Tutor: Consider a more academically formal and less colloquial form of this phrase so that the expression is not lost on the layman reader. For example, “In contrast to the supercharger, . . .” Comment by Tutor: As previously noted, follow-up this sentence with an example of how the turbocharger affects the car in a real-world context and, precisely, the driver’s experience. This style will present the technical definitions with an illustrative and clear example for the layman reader. Comment by Tutor: To establish your authority, strive to introduce the author, the article, and the substance/meaning of the quote before presenting the quote. For example, “In his article, “Jackhammers and Pistons”, John Smith details the distinction between the two engineering strategies, stating, “[Quote]” (71).” Comment by Tutor: Consider revising into a less wordy and more actively-voiced description of the author. For example, “In his article, “Way of the Blade”, sword enthusiast and fencing commentator Jack Johnson . . ..” Throughout your paper, strive to use less wordy and more actively-voiced phrases and structure to strengthen your sentence flow and, thus, your authority. Comment by Tutor: Firstly, place a comma before the article title. Secondly, place quotation marks around the article. For example, “in her article, “The Article Title”, . . .” Comment by Tutor: Consider revising into a more assertive word such “seeks” Comment by Tutor: Consider revising into a more actively-voiced structure. For example, “. . . to answer the turbo or supercharger debate by . . .” Often, actively-voiced structure places the description ahead, rather than after, a noun; in this case “question” Comment by Tutor: Specify: “the two” what? Devices? What kind of devices? Comment by Tutor: Unless permitted by your assignment instructions, refrain from addressing your paper directly; additionally, use a more assertive and declarative style as your thesis statement (which closes your introductory paragraph). For example, revise to state that, through analyzing Salomon’s writing techniques, argument claims, and understanding of his audience, he achieves (or fails) an explicitly stated goal of his article. Close your thesis statement by noting the significance of your analysis of Salomon’s article to the modern reader

One would say that Sanjay's audience includes the people who are wondering whether to get a super or turbocharger and being that he has been writing about cars and automotive-related stories, all his followers who like reading his material. The article portrays how the aim for both turbo and supercharger systems is to force more air into the combustion chamber than would normally be allowed with standard atmospheric pressure at sea level since more air in the combustion chamber, along with proper tuning, allows for more fuel to be burn which in turn creates more energy and thus more power. However, seeing the techniques used, the author seems like his goal is to help the people who are conflicted between super and turbochargers to make a decision. Comment by Tutor: Remove this phrase to strengthen your authority and assertive tone. For example, “Salomon’s audience includes . . . “ Comment by Tutor: For academic formality, use the author’s last name only and throughout your paper Comment by Tutor: For consistency, use “turbo or supercharger” throughout your paper. Also close the statement with stating what such readers hope to gain out of finalizing a selection. For example, “to get a super or turbocharger to improve driving capabilities”. This last note should also be specified in your introductory paragraph Comment by Tutor: For such aside information, place a comma before “being” Comment by Tutor: Strive to use a present-tense style when referring to the author or the reader throughout your paper; for example, “and, since he writes about . . .” Comment by Tutor: For technical clarity, consider revising into “of” Comment by Tutor: Consider introducing this term in your introductory paragraph, particularly alongside or in favor of “systems” Comment by Tutor: Consider ending the sentence here to avoid a run-on sentence. When a sentence begins to shift focus or is too long for the layman reader to comprehend or lose track of the sentence’s point, begin a new sentence. Comment by Tutor: Consider tying this sentence back to the audience discussion that opened the paragraph. For paragraph organization, follow this model: “one paragraph=one subject” Comment by Tutor: Throughout your paper, use assertive language. For example, “The ball can be considered bouncy” can be revised into “The ball is bouncy.”

Sanjay was successful in keeping his emotions concerning the two chargers aside. He used facts and logic to explain how turbochargers use potential energy in the exhaust to spin an impeller that compresses air and feeds it to the motor. He also mentions the "turbo lag" which is as a result of the turbocharger taking a little while to spool up. The same logic technique is used to show that superchargers are belt driven from the main pulley which means they have no lag and how their systems are substantially less complicated and easier to install and require very little tuning.

Although by employing facts and logic and keeping any emotions out of his article Sanjay comes out as trustworthy, if someone keenly looks at his writing he or she can doubt his work. The reason why is that he has not cited any other material that could provide evidence to back up his work. Even with all the facts and logic, there is no other credible source that he has made use of when writing the article and if he has, he did not mention them anywhere. Readers are left to decide whether to believe his arguments based on his writing reputation on cars and automotive related content. However, he has arranged his facts and arguments well, it is easy to follow and understand the contents of the article.

Sanjay effectively covered how turbochargers and superchargers function by force-feeding oxygen into cars engines to increase the amount of the fuel that an engine can burn thus boosting the car's power. He also mentions examples of cars that have each of the chargers and their horsepower. Nonetheless, the article fails to address how even though cars with superchargers deliver power fast and at a lower rpm, sometimes the power is delivered so quickly it can shock the system and cause you to lose traction or break something. He also failed to mention that despite all of the advantages superchargers have going for them, they still don't make up for the fact that superchargers will never have the power capability of a turbocharger setup.

Overall, I do not think that the author was able to achieve the goal or rather persuade his readers on what charger to buy. He simply described how both the super and turbochargers function, their characteristics, advantages, disadvantages, and what makes them different but other than that he did not provide any content to help anyone stuck on the two in making a decision. The article has no evidence or fact that would convince someone to buy supercharger instead of a turbocharger and vice versa. If the goal was to help one make a choice between the two then the argument completely failed. Sanjay concludes his article with reasons why either of the systems is necessary. This is where the article falls apart. Instead of concluding with some strong facts and remarks that would help someone to make up their mind on what system they'll get, it brings one to the same point he or she was at the beginning of the article. Not knowing which route to take, turbo or supercharger. All in all, it was an informative and interesting article.
