ENG 108 LP WEEK FOUR – MODULE FOUR The Research Essay

Due: 22 June before 11:59 PM

Assignments (Written): Writing the Research Essay due Monday 22 June before 11:59 PM AZ Time – there are no rewrites –I will give you corrections and you will have 24 hours to complete them from when I post them ( the corrections) – You will need the corrections for your Research Proposal Essay that includes the same information.

Assignment: The Research Essay

When finished with the pre-writing, you will write the Research Essay following the model provided that is a separate attachment in the modules. This model will let you know exactly what goes in each section. You must write the essay with subtitles , so nothing is forgotten. There is a FULL three-page minimum (down to the bottom of each page) plus your work cited page you must put together in the same word doc. Remember, if you did your AB and Pre-writing correctly, you will have more than enough information to get started! Now you hopefully will understand how this course builds on top of each previous assignment to create one Research Essay towards the end.

What goes in a Research Essay? (We are not doing a research paper – that is different)

In this course, you have learned all about Peer Reviewed Journal Articles; what they are, why they are so important, how to read them and what goes inside them. At this point, all your previous work in this course should have given you enough material to write your Research Essay if you have done all the assignments correctly and completely without “cutting corners” meaning doing less or minimal work). You may need more information if your articles have not given you enough background information on your topic. As we learned, the Introduction part of Journal Articles will give us some general background information on a topic and your letting the readers know in general what the issue is (problem) surrounding your topic. The Background Orienting your Reader Section will be giving the reader some facts regarding the historical background –history of the topic and problems. If you do not have that in any of your journal articles, you will have to find a new Peer Reviewed article for that information by simply researching the topic in general.

*We have been using a former International student’s paper on MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) as out Model. We have followed the student from The Sources to the AB to the Research Essay – please pay close attention how the student has progressed in the assignment – built up to this essay.

Now that you have your information – let’s build your Research Essay.

The Sections for your Paper:

These are the parts to your research essay and what you need to put them into the essay with the needed information underneath it – just like in the sample/model each area:

1.   Introduction:  The Introduction will be about your ideas on the topic and introduce the issues.

2. Background Section: Orienting Your Readers: Historical referencing of the topic and the historical background of the problems involved.

3. Importance of the Issue: This is where you will bring in ALL your sources and discus your finding with regards to your research question and how important it is using in text citations where they belong to prove your points with quotations and paraphrasing. Again, if you did your Pre writing correctly, you just may have all the information you need or almost enough! Start re reading those Journals!

4. Conclusion: Your thoughts on how your research shows the need for change or further study for better outcomes of your topic and research question. Your opinion counts as long as it is backed up by your research.

5. The final page of your essay will have your already completed Works Cited as you did this for your Pre writing and attached it to that assignment. It should be perfect from your Final AB – if you made the corrections that I pointed out in the AB Draft, you will be fine. If you continued to keep your errors and made no changes – you will have points removed.

Grade/Points Breakdown for the Research Essay:

Three full Page minimum Plus one page for the Work Cited – Total 4 page minimum – yes, you can write as much as you like.

Format: MLA & Content/Grammar & Following Directions will have points removed if incorrect at the discretion of the Instructor

Points : Possible 15 Points
