Essay #3: Community Perspectives: An Observation Essay

Your purpose here is to think critically about a specific group of people in your community. Using Tony Mirabelli’s essay “Learning to Serve” as an example, you will observe your chosen group and develop a significant FOCUSED thesis and analysis that undermines or complicates generally accepted views. Think for example of the ways that Mirabelli argues for a new way of looking at literacy in service workers.

This assignment requires three distinct methods of inquiry. First, act as a good participant observer, recording what you see without bias, assumption, or presupposition (make sure that you inform the group you are observing if appropriate). Second, analyze your observations and find a research question to focus on for your essay. Finally, you must rhetorically craft your writing to present both a rich description of your chosen group and a focused analysis.

Your Essay should:

· Be about a focused and specific community and have an effective research question and thesis statement.

· Use sensory descriptions (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste) and effective figurative language if appropriate.

· Have an engaging, exciting introduction (start fast! Grab the reader!) that also sets up the direction of the paper.

· Include a focused analyses of detailed observations.

· Conclude with a question or idea that leaves the reader with a significant understanding of what you want to say about your chosen community.

· Use rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos and logos) to effectively argue your thesis

· Exhibit a style of writing appropriate to the genre.

· Exhibit evidence of an effective writing process that involves brainstorming, revision, proofreading, and editing.

· Contain correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
