Context

We’ve been discussing and writing our individual experiences and observations of issues in our communities, and we have been sharing and learning about specific ones like the origins of systemic racism in America. Thus, we’ve started to explore causes of many injustices, and identified patterns of power, prejudice, and privilege that have been passed down through generations. We’ve also examined specific disadvantages that affected groups face, and the disadvantages others around them face as well. We have discussed the ‘voice’ of various forms of text as tools of raising awareness and protest, but we’ve also seen examples of words and actions effecting change, or leading to solutions. In the Proposal Assignment, you have narrowed your focus down to specific issues we view as harmful and unjust to members of society, and shared your train of thought and plan for how you may build your argument. This assignment is where you will begin to apply these ideas of your argument into the academic essay structure we’ve been learning about.

Instructions

Organize and write about the ideas you’ve outlined in your proposal into an academic essay. Your essay should have an introduction, at least two body paragraphs (one for each issue/injustice you’re focusing on), and a conclusion.

For your evidence, you may use personal experience once, and you must refer to at least two other reliable sources (.gov, .org, periodical/news websites, an article from LaGuardia’s databases, or other media approved by me). Whether you quote or paraphrase information from your sources, you must give credit to the author/creator with in-text citations in MLA format.

You must create a Works Cited page and properly cite each of the sources you’ve used according to MLA 8th Edition guidelines which can be found at the links provided on Blackboard.

Now that we are learning more about plagiarism and the importance of acknowledging others’ intellectual property, there will be no exceptions made for anyone caught plagiarizing. If you plagiarize on this paper, you will receive an automatic 0 for the assignment with no chance to revise. (Please see class syllabus for more information on Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism policy).

Guidelines

· This essay should be between 2.5 - 3 pages minimum.

· It should be in the format of a Word Document file (.doc, .docx). No other file types will be accepted.

· Double-space the text of your essay and use Times New Roman, Calibri, or Arial font in size 12.

· Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides.

· Provide an appropriate MLA header on the top left corner, and include your last name and page number on the top right corner of each page.

· Create your own title for the essay.
