CHEM 3061 Encounters Assignment

Environmental chemistry is the chemistry of the world around us! Learning about it should change

how you engage with some information/media that you come across in your daily lives. This

assignment asks you to reflect on encounters in your daily lives and how the material covered in

this course caused you to notice something new and/or provided a new perspective. The purpose

of this assignment is to help you think about and apply your chemistry knowledge to the real world.

Each encounter will be graded out of 5. For full marks, your submission must link your encounter

to something you learned in the course. Your reflection should be written in full sentences and free

of typographical errors.

Examples of potential encounters include: news article, social media post, movie, book, song, a

conversation, a past experience, etc. Some resources that can be used for inspiration can be found

in the link provided on eClass. However, please do not feel that you are limited to these resources.

You are welcome (and encouraged) to be creative.

Submit your first encounter by Tuesday, February 28 using the google form link on eClass.

Submit your second encounter by Thursday, April 6 using the google form link on eClass.

Grading scheme

1. Brief description of your encounter, including a link to the material if applicable. (1 mark)

2. Short reflection (100-250 word) reflection on your encounter. (4 marks)

You may consider one or more of the questions below to inspire your reflection. You are not

limited to these questions! These are just possible sources of inspiration.

 What material from our class did you think about during this encounter?

 Did this encounter happen because of something you learned in the class?

 Did the course material lead you to notice something in particular during this encounter?

 How do you think your encounter would have been different had you not learned the material in this course?

 Was there incorrect, incomplete, or misleading scientific information provided in the material that you could identify?

 Was the information presented appropriate for the audience? Can you identify any ways that the presentation could have been improved?
