Instructions for Argumentative Research Essay (Worth 20% of Total Semester Grade)

You will write a research paper of approximately 750-850 words, following MLA 8th edition style on one

of the topics below. See “Formatting a Research Paper” at https://style.mla.org/formatting-papers/ for

very specific instructions about current MLA formatting guidelines. The objectives of this assignment are

to allow you to explore a topic of interest from the list below and to strengthen your ability to

conceptualize, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information effectively.

• Should teachers carry handguns to deter dangerous intruders? Weigh the pros and cons.

• Argue about the effects of cell phones on violence, cheating, and other social issues.

• Warming climate—natural fluctuations or man-made catastrophe? What does the evidence

show? Why is there controversy?

• Women still earn only 75 cents for every $1 a man earns. Fair or unfair? Explain both views.

You will need to cite at least five (5) references; up to three (3) of these can be from credible electronic

sources and at least two (2) must come from nonelectronic sources. The difference between both

sources is explained at MLA Citations at https://valenciacollege.edu/students/library/mla-apa-chicago-

guides/mlacitation.php. You should strive to find the most authoritative and/or up-to-date sources. You

should go to the library to find material from reputable sources, as well as information from the

librarians about putting together a worthwhile research paper.

I will grade the papers using a rubric based on style (grammar and mechanics) and content. Your ability

to follow well-established MLA research paper formatting practices will weigh heavily in the outcome.

• Style: Is the paper well-structured? Are grammar and spelling correct? Are references cited

correctly in the text and at the end? Is the paper a pleasure to read?

• Content and references: Do you cover the most important points of the issue? Do you have up-

to-date information? Were you able to locate the most important sources of information for

your topic? Please see me well before the deadline if you are having trouble locating sources.

I strongly recommend that you write your paper a few days early and let it sit so that you can review it

with a fresh eye. It is also a good idea to get input from a friend or from a tutor at the Academic Writing

Support Center.
