EN234 Unit 6 Reading Journal Mark Twain- Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc This is fictional take on Joan of Arc has been a very entertaining read. In volume 1 of book 2 Joan is allowed to dress like a man and became a General for France. Joan is a wonderful character with deep morality that makes you feel that you yourself need to do better in every aspect of life. I am truly envious of the way Twain wrote of Joan and how Louis recalls her. When Twain wrote that Joan’s most fantastic gift was her “seeing eye”. It is so easy to judge from the outside and never look at the inside of a person to their character and see the true potential. Real leaders can do that, and true leaders can help coach that out of their followers.
I can see why this may have been Mark Twain’s favorite story he told. I’m clueless as to why I and others have not heard of this book. Although Twains book is fiction, it gave me a different view of Joan than what I had from learning about her in history class through grade school. I am not a religious person and do not believe in a God at all. I always believed it was absurd that anyone would ever listen to a person claiming to speak to angels., let alone a woman in the 1400’s. I am no Joan of Arc however, as a woman in the military I find it I connect with her character by working in an environment dominated by male presence. The many times she was undermined because she is a woman was very relatable for me. She never let the restrictions on women in the 15th century stop her from pursuing her beliefs and what she knew to be true. I’m glad that I was introduced to this fiction.
