Donetta wrote the following body paragraph about the importance of vaccinating children. Her topic sentence and her concluding sentence are both in bold to show you how paraphrasing is typically used in essay writing. The United States should create a law requiring all children to be vaccinated within their first two years of life. To start, vaccinations protect children from diseases that have the potential to end their lives. According to the CDC, an increase in measles resulted in 20 deaths in the year 2016 (Emerson, 2018). Second, most information about the risks of vaccinations is not accurate. To be specific, John Hopkins University published a report in 2017 which debunked the top 10 misconceptions about vaccinations which were trending online at the time of publication (Katz, 2017). To sum up, a law which mandates that all parents vaccinate their children within the first two years after birth should be enacted by the United States. Directions: Paraphrase each sentence in order to avoid plagiarism. Public schools should be required to teach computer literacy classes to students by the 9th grade. Summarizing Practice Summarizing allows the writer to take a topic or issue and focus on the main ideas in order to help the reader understand a complex issue. Summarizing often happens when a reader boils down the main idea of an article and explains it to the reader in an essay. However, as an allied healthcare professional, you may have to summarize important information which occurs in real time on the job in a report to your supervisor, or to update a patient’s file.
