English Composition II Writing Guide
Course Description In English Composition II, the concept of becoming rhetorical is examined. Rhetoric is defined in Becoming Rhetorical: Analyzing and Composing in a Multimedia World as “the wide array of communicative devices humans have at their disposal to create effects on each other” (Nicotra, 2019). The course readings and multimedia and activities are designed to expand students’ understanding of written, visual, auditory, and multimodal rhetoric, the importance of research, and critical thinking skills. English Composition II focuses on academic writing. Using the Internet and the online library to find scholarly (peer-reviewed) and other credible sources are integrated into course activities with an emphasis on using source support to add depth and credibility to students’ writing. Critical thinking skills are employed to evaluate texts, sources, peers writing, and the students’ own writing. Course Objectives
• Develop an understanding of how all designed communication is rhetorical by reading/view the course reading and multi-media
• Demonstrate the ability to create clear, focused, organized, and source-supported writing in a variety of specific writing activities including summarizing and analyzing texts, evaluating research, and writing a persuasive argument essay.
• Apply research skills to Identify scholarly(peer-reviewed) and credible sources to support writing activities.
• Apply revision and editing skills to enhance/improve a persuasive argument essay • Apply APA format and in-text and reference citation to written assignments • Evaluate peer responses and peer writing in the discussion forums and peer reviews.
