Prewriting and Outlining for the Narrative Essay
Part I: Respond to Questions
The event I want to write about that had a lasting impact on my life is Direct discrimination at the gym. I asked to leave a gym where I was exercising because the gym instructor thought I had schizoaffective disorder. The event happened at our local gym, where most people from my neighborhood went to exercise. By then, I was 21 years old, and it was in the evening. The people involved in this event were one of the members of the gym, the gym instructor, and myself.
The best audience for my narrative will be those who don't prove the information before using it. Like for instance, my gym instructor discriminated against me based on his perception. Other groups of people who can be my audience are the victims of discrimination, the victimizers, and people who enforce laws and policies that protect people from being discriminated against. Lastly, the main message that I want to convey to my audience is how people are discriminated against based on their disabilities and how discrimination can be solved.
Part II – Prewriting
Many people today are suffering from discrimination. Discrimination does more than violating a most basic human right as it has broader social and economic consequences. Hence it stifles opportunities, wastes the needed human talent for economic progress, and leads to social tensions and inequalities.
Discrimination may take many different forms, i.e., it can take directly. It can also be based on negative attitudes, biases, and stereotypes about people with disabilities. One of the examples in which a person can directly be discriminated against is when organizations or individuals specifically impose extra burdens that are not imposed on others or withholding benefits that are available to other people without any valid reason.
Discrimination may also happen indirectly. Thus, it can be carried out through another organization or person. For instance, a private school may instruct admission scouts hired to recruit or admit students with disabilities and have costly accommodation requirements.
Discrimination, in most cases, is always subtle. The remarks of discrimination are not often made directly, and people don't voice stereotypical views as a reason for their behaviors. To sum it all, many laws, requirements, or standards are put in place without considering the unique needs of people with disabilities. Thus, organizations have to understand where these may have the effect of discrimination and remove the effect where it occurs.
