Should Guns Be Allowed on College Campuses

Today’s society is becoming more dangerous than ever. Schools aren’t allowing firearms because they feel it doesn’t create a safe environment for the students and faculty. I feel guns should be allowed on college campuses because there is times where help is too late under certain circumstances only.

I feel students should be allowed to carry guns on college campuses abiding by the laws. For example, in Louisiana we are allowed to open carry free of any licenses as long as you’re over 21 and not convicted of any felon. To conceal a weapon, you must have conceal carry permit and as residents of Louisiana we are allowed to have firearms in our homes or car with no license abiding by the law. Concealing a weapon is having the weapon put away so there shouldn’t be any issues of it being stolen or lost. On campus they have students from all over the world who lives in the dorms. Which is considered their home for the time being. Campus police are not always available right away, so if something was to happen I feel the students should be able to protect themselves in their dorm legally. If there is an active shooter and police are not around to secure the area, students then should be able to defend. The students should have rights and privileges as if they’re regular civilians. If students could get in trouble for things on campus forcing them in jail, they should follow all laws. The second Amendment states that people have the right to bear arms. Not allowing firearms on campus doesn’t mean there will be no safety issues. Firearms are only dangerous when they are in possession of the wrong people. There are more dangerous things students can get in touch with that is on campus besides a gun. For example, a swimming pool is a safety hazard which can cause someone to drown but mostly all colleges have them. Students can also receive a background checks as any other adult would before they purchase or carry any type of weapon. However, having any type of weapons be would be used for defensive purposes only. If having firearms on campus was allowed, I feel it wouldn’t affect the crime rate. Regardless if weapons are allowed or not, if something bad was to happen it wouldn’t be the cause. High school shootings have happened where no guns were allowed and innocent children were killed and injured. Maybe, that could be a reason may target schools by it being a firearm free zone.

As you can see, I feel students on college campuses should be allowed to carry firearms following their state laws and rights. It could potentially slow down shootings and serve as a defensive tool to protect students and faculty. Also, students staying in the dorms should always feel safe and protected due to some being away from family.
