Okay, confirmation that the recording has started. And so this week is a little bit different. I'm not going to lecture you all. I'm essentially going to open up the week seven assignment and walk you through it and let you ask me questions because we're not introducing anything new to you at this point. There are things that you've already learned. your week seven discussion is optional much like your week six assignment last week was optional giving you a little bit of a break here I'll be keeping an eye on that so if you do want to take part in the discussion it's all out there go ahead and do that but otherwise I am going to start screen sharing entire screen and i have our week seven take home application right here and so this is what you will see you all and and here's how it'll go so i would like a cover page for everyone so to help with my grading and to help you all practice with apa so make sure you have a cover page so i can keep track of who submitted what um please pretty please make sure that you read each question fully and carefully before answering it hurts me to deduct points when you missed part of a question so make sure that you are are answering each question fully and carefully. So this is solid advice. This third bullet point here is solid advice for any academic work that you have. We're going to be better at some pieces than others. So when you first go through the exam, use your time well. Look over it before you start. Read the whole thing before you ever start and then make a plan. Start with the things that you know for sure and go ahead and knock them out and leave yourself more time for the things that you struggle with, okay? Move on and come back to it later. Now, important point here on bullet point four, if you are completely stuck and you're not sure, you may ask me for guidance. So you'll need to email me directly and ask me for guidance. So I will provide hints or steps for certain parts of the question. But do keep in mind there is going to be some kind of credit loss. Previous instructors gave no credit for those steps. I will give you as much credit as I can, but you're going to get docked if you have to reach out and ask me for specifics about a question. But you can do that. Just use that option sparingly. So everything that you're expected to do in week seven are things that you've already done so refer to your course materials the textbook you have from your first quant class should still be good or the ebook in this class to review those statistical concepts like ttas sanova correlation regression and of course descriptive statistics so those software guides those instructional videos that are embedded into this course can help you with the technical execution if that's where you struggle. And finally, just asking questions is no problem. So if you're asking me for clarification, while I can't give you direct answers without some kind of point loss, I absolutely can provide useful clarifications. So if the more detailed and clear your question is, the easier it is for me to answer it without having to dock any points, which I don't want to do. Okay, so by the way, this instruction mostly refers to SPSS, but the data is there in Jamovi as well. I've given you instruction in Jamovi throughout the course, and if you prefer SPSS, those resources are embedded in the course as well. If there's some resource that you need that's missing from the course, please shoot me an email and let me know and I will get it up as soon as possible. So now here's the scenario that you're going to start out with. So you're going to have the week seven data. So either in whatever format you downloaded, and I think I even gave it to you in an Excel file this week. So you've got multiple options. You will download that data set. And here's the info about that. So So, Roy Baumaster and his colleagues studied self-regulation. In other words, they ask, why don't we eat all of the tasty tidbits we encounter, attend all the parties when we should be studying, and have *** with every attractive potential partner who crosses our path? In short, how do we manage to forego temptation? So, an exploration of fictitious or made-up data regarding these questions will comprise the bulk of this final exam so you're going to be working with this same data data set so this data represents scores of 800 recent college graduates who participated in the study first they were asked to control their emotions while watching a very sad movie and then they completed a challenging set of brain teasers okay now one week later participants returned to the lab and again watched a sad movie. This time, they were not asked to control their emotions and completed a different but equally challenging set of brain teasers. In both cases, the researchers measured how much participants persisted at the difficult brain teasers. So these are the variables that you're working with in your data set. This is important information for your reporting. So the subject is just the unique subject identifier from 1 to 800. Personality type is dichotomous, so zero for introvert and one for extrovert. CTRL per, control per, is persistence after watching a sad movie and being asked to control emotions. So this is on a one to 10 scale with higher numbers indicating higher persistence. Now the no control per variable is the persistent scale after watching a sad movie and not being asked to control their emotions. So same scale one to 10 with higher numbers indicating greater persistence. Now need control, need underscore control is the self-reported need for control in the environment. So, this is measured two months before participating in the study. So, before ever taking part, they completed this piece of the study on a scale of one to five with higher numbers indicating greater need for control over one's environment. Finally, the last variable is job. So, the first job or activity following graduation. So, this is a categorical variable with zero indicating public service job, one indicating graduate school, two indicating travel, or three indicating a private sector job. So pretty broad categories there. Okay, so the first part after you've familiarized yourself with the data and make sure that you understand the variables and scales of measurement and all that that you're working with. The first thing you need to do is to create a new Z-score variable in whatever software of choice. So if you download an SPSS or Jumoke with this data set, so create a new variable that represents the Z-score of persistence on brain teasers after being asked to control emotions. So y'all got to watch out for the naming of variables and knowing what they mean. So control per is persistence after being asked to control emotions, and you'll analyze the data for outliers. So you'll use those standard markers, and in your write-up, you will indicate potential outliers. So identify those specific outliers, including the relevant output, and writing a brief justification for whether or not these are true outliers. So be sure to include a figure. now this is one of those examples i'm not going to tell you at this point what figure you should include to support your conclusion about z scores but you will need to do that okay um justify whether any potential outliers should be kept removed or transformed but don't actually remove or transform anything so that the data stays the same i just want you to to simply report what you would do based on this analysis, okay? Number two, you're going to dive into inferential statistics. So the question is, is self-reported need to control one's environment, so the variable need underscore control, associated, so notice that that word is bolded, and when I say something is associated that should indicate a certain type of statistical analysis to you. So is self-reported need to control one's environment associated with persistent scores after watching a sad movie without emotion control? So that's the research question. So what you need to answer first, what statistical tests would you conduct and why? So explain your reasoning, then run that test in your software of choice, so SPSS or Jamovi, paste your actual output into the document, and then write up your findings as if you were reporting them in a journal article following beautiful APA reporting guidelines. Okay. Number three, we're moving on to inferential statistics. That could also be a cue about the, well, I won't go too far. So further into inferential statistics, do introverts and extroverts, so do these two different groups, differ in their need to control their environment? So what statistical tests would you conduct and why, explain your reasoning, run the actual test, paste in the output from the software. I want to see the actual Jamovi or SPSS output so you can screenshot that and paste it into your document. And then in your own words, write up the findings as if you were reporting them in a journal article following APA statistical reporting guidelines. Okay, number four, job plans and percentages. So I want you for this part to create a frequency table in your software in SPSS or Jamovi showing how many participants pursue each type of job or activity after graduation. So you'll create that table and then paste that into your Word document. Then I would like for you to calculate and report the percentage of participants specifically who plan to travel after graduation. Number five, does persistence after watching a sad movie and being asked to control emotions vary by job plans? So does persistence, does this outcome vary based on these categorical groups of job plans? Giving y'all so many hints here. question what statistical tests would you conduct and why explain your reasoning run that analysis paste your output into the document you do need to include a figure here to illustrate the results that you're looking at and describe the trends that you're seeing so don't miss this piece then write up your findings as if reporting them in a journal article again, following perfect APA formatting guidelines. Notice what the points are worth here, you all, but don't lose these little points. The loss of little points can add up quickly. I want you all to do really well. All right, number six, let's look at the distribution for the variable need for control. So, determine whether that variable is approximately normally distribute it. So, you know how to do this, right? We create a certain type of visualization. We run some tests to look at parameters. So, do those things. Provide statistical evidence and a figure. And then based on that evidence, provide your conclusion about whether need for control can be treated as a normally distributed variable. Then for need for control, that same variable, I would like all of these descriptive statistics. So mean, median, mode, variance, and sample size. Moving on to number seven, a group of psychologists was interested in what kind of humor people find funny. They randomly assigned people to read about different types of humor. So, knock-knock jokes versus puns versus sarcasm versus practical jokes. And then folks rated how funny each joke, comment, or situation was. Ratings were made on this scale, so 1 meaning not funny at all to 10 meaning extremely funny. and then they conducted a one-way ANOVA with a two-key post -hoc test to see if there were differences in average ratings of humor across the four different groups. Here is the SPSS output in your assignment, okay? So, you'll need to interpret this output, you all. So, as a note, if you're a Jamovi user instead of an SPSS user, the SIG column, this S-I-G, that is your probability. It's the P value in SPSS is that SIG column. And I think everything else you should be able to figure out there. So I want you to interpret those results comparing humor ratings across four groups. So first describe the results reporting all relevant statistics. So think about what you need to report for a one-way ANOVA using APA guidelines about the humor differences across groups. Okay. So not too bad there. Now for number eight, an industrial psychologist was hired by a company to determine whether gender and work location impacted confidence. The results of this study are presented in the figure below. So here's the figure. Hopefully you already have thoughts at this point just by looking at that figure. So I want you to analyze that figure by first identifying the statistical test performed. So you absolutely should be able to base your answer on the study description as well as the figure. I would like for you to label and figure per APA guidelines, so you'll need to do some editing there. Then give me the hypothesis about gender and work location effects on confidence. What is the hypothesis in this study? And then using evidence from the figure, describe the results to me in detail as much as you can from this figure. Okay. Number nine, a researcher is interested in whether age, years of experience, or confidence predict certification exam scores. Well, yeah. So using the table below, sounds like where did that cut off? So, using the table below these tables, what you will do is identify the recommended statistical test and provide justification. Determine the best predictor of exam scores and justify with statistics. You all learned how to determine what is the best predictor. identify other variables like age years of experience or confidence that improve prediction accuracy back that up with statistics not just words then identify oh yeah identify variables those same kind of variables that do not predict exam performance so which of those do and which of them don't give me details and then write up the best model so the model that predicts the most variants in APA format. So, using that coefficients table below, you'll write the regression equation and explain its meaning. And then you don't need to create one, but suggest a figure that you would want to see to help interpret the data in this example. All right. And that's the information that you will need to answer that last question. I'm out of here. All right. Farron, you have your hand up. Yes, please go ahead. Do you have a question? Just thought I'd ask. It's a great question. But what I will tell you is that the couple of last classes that you've had are going to do a very good job of preparing you for comps. So I, the first part of your comp exams, you're going to have to delve into the theory. You're the whole first part of your comps. You're going to need to be able to talk about competing theories that best explain your ideas that you're interested in. Then you'll get into measure. So Farhan, you were in 802 last term, weren't you? Yes. So you know how we went through that class, right? So you start with the theory and then you dig into the theory and you find competing theories and then you create your research questions, your hypotheses, and then you go find measures. You go find good, reliable, valid measures, and you compare a couple of those and decide which one is really best. And it kind of moves you through that process. The goal of your comprehensive exam to all is to make sure that you're ready to move to dissertation. So when you can complete your comprehensive exams, showing that you have at least one good, solid research question, that you've done your due diligence in your literature review, that you've done the reading, that you know what measures you would use and who created them and how valid and reliable they are and why you would choose that measure over a different measure. That's what you're demonstrating in your comprehensive exams that you're ready to move on to dissertation. I feel super confident in the students that I've worked with for, for several terms, unless I'm just continuing to beat you up in your, in your feedback and everything you're, I, I think you're going to do great. I'm sure you're going to do great for on, and I think Latasha is going to do great. The ones that I know that are going in, I think you all are going to do it. Just take your time. Don't get lost in the forest for the trees, y'all. I went off on a side tangent. Did I give you enough info there? You feel a little more prepared for on maybe? Well, you can keep going. And any little tidbit would help. Well, I'll tell you, I mean, so this class, we focus mostly on the stats and the methods right so a lot of that is relevant to your comps like question four the last question on your comps y'all are gonna have to do some analyses and you're gonna have to write up the results in beautiful apa format you will have multiple faculty members so we don't know who you are the all the faculty come together when when all the comp exams get sent out you're all just assigned a number we don't know who wrote what and there's a primary and a secondary reviewer. And so if you don't pass the primary reviewer, they send you on to the secondary reviewer. And then we go back and forth and decide. So I do have a lot of good perspective on question four because I have you all in these classes. So I feel pretty great, like for honest, especially like, I know some of you are going to go through question four, like no problem, But I haven't had you in some of those other, like, theory-based classes and your tests and measurements and stuff. I know what I've seen, and I feel confident in you all. What was I going to ask? Are we going to know who the reviewers are? No, none of us ever know. It's blind on both ends. So the students don't know and the faculty don't know. Okay. so yeah no one knows who's reviewing who we we keep it that way on purpose because you don't want bias to creep in so we have absolutely no idea and there's the there's the io program and the gen psych program and typically i we we cross we go back and forth because we're all psychologist, so the exams could go across boards. But grading comps is, I know y'all think I'm a dork about it, but it is like, it's nice for me to see the fruits of all those labor on our part and on your part. Like you are in this program to gain the skills that you need to do independent research. How long do we get to complete the exam? I think you get two weeks. I don't teach the class, so don't quote me on it, but I believe you get two solid weeks. Then we get the rest of the term off, right? If you're going into comps now, then you already had 802 with me. And if you all came out of 802, like if you could move through that, like go back and review your notes or your materials from that class and kind of that eight week course really moves you through at least the questions three and four on your comp exam. If you, but with the variables that you're actually interested in working with rather than the ones that you were limited to in my course, but it's that same kind of thing. Like you create a really good, a well-defined research question. You operationally define your variables. You choose reliable and valid measures to test your hypothesis and then talk about how your planned analysis. this. So then in question four, you're going to get given data. They're going to give you some data and you're going to have to analyze it. So this course is really great for that piece. You know, am I rambly? Is it helpful? No, it's helpful. Okay, good. Good, good. Well, until you all get into comps. So once you're in comps, I actually can't talk to you about any of this stuff. But between now and comps, if you go, if you've had me for other classes and you want to go back through some of your other stuff or through this class or whatever, and you want to schedule a meeting with me to review some things that you might not have gotten, I am so happy to do that. You all, I can, I could even do it as a group or something. I, I want to support you all in, in successfully making that, that next step. And we've, we've been working to prepare you all along.
