Professor and Class,

This week I chose Jupiter and Callisto by Peter Paul Reuben.  This painting is about two mythical beings, they have a tragic story. I have ncluded the link below if you wish to look it up.

What is so remarkable about this panting is the use of light. The two women are the brightest part of the painting, in particular the first woman's skin seems to glow. What I have really enjoyed in all of Reubens paintings is the way he paints human flesh, not smooth or taught, but very real and looking soft on the painting. The cloth has folds both on the one clothed woan and folded underneath the other.  The second woman creates a strong diagonal line, it extends all the way down to her foot. The light of the painting keeps you focused on the two women, there is a bird in the right backround and other symbols that seem almost tucked in and around the women.  There is a light coming from the back right which seems to be sunrise or sunset, it tells me that the time is the end or beginning of the day. Organc looking grass and flowers are spread on the ground.
