What do you think about the employee’s behavior? Does it rise to the level of bad behavior? Do you think the employer’s reaction was appropriate?
What do you think about the employee’s behavior?
Hussein Mehaidli had worked as a general manager at US-based goods distributor Fastenal for six years. He was fired on 30th December when he lashed his company on Twitter after receiving a cheap bottle of barbecue sauce as a holiday gift. The stoush started when he and other Canadian Fastenal workers received $U56 ($ A8.73) bottle of barbecue sauce and a wooden barbecue scarper with the Fastenal logo as a Christmas gift. According to Hussein Mehaidli employees received a far more generous goodie box filled with treats ahead of the holidays which he and his colleagues ‘’always really appreciated’’. After realizing that Canadian workers had received the misery gift while US workforce received the usual treat box he decided to tweet. Mehaidli tweeted the following from an anonymous account.’’What kind of multi-billion dollar company gifts it’s (sic) Canadian employees barbecue sause as a holiday gift? Yet the USA employees stuff their face with an account holiday gift box!’’ Employee’s behavior was indiscrete with his criticism. By tweeting he may have violated Fastenal’s confidentiality policies not to mention clauses outlining acceptable online behavior while using social media channels like Twiter.
Does it rise to the level of bad behavior?
Yes, Mehaidli shared information about the organization on chrismas gift on social media which was bad behavior. Sharing confidential information about an organization on twitter can craft its reputation to the public.
Do you think the employer’s reaction was appropriate?
Yes, employer’s reaction was appropriate because this may seem to be a relatively minor infraction-even Florness suggested that it could have been handled in a different way-this slightly could have led to serious long-term brand consequences for the employer. A single Twitter of Mehaidli could put a carefully crafted reputation at risk and comprise the employer and organization’s ability to attract and also retain talent.
