Emotional appeals

Pathos–Evoking listeners’ emotions

A speaker can evoke positive emotions (happiness, joy, love, pride, hope, etc.) and provide ways the audience can experience and/or sustain these emotions.

A speaker can evoke negative emotions (fear, guilt shame, anger, sadness) and provide ways the audience can avoid or get rid of these emotions.

You will need emotional appeals in your persuasive speech!

I am using advertisements to show examples of how the pathos emotional appeal can be used for persuasion.

You must incorporate at least 3 emotional appeals throughout your persuasive speech.

Fear

The feeling or condition of being afraid.

Individuality

The particular character, or aggregate of qualities, that distinguishes one person or thing from others

Conformity

action in accord with prevailing social standards, attitudes, practices, etc.

Everyone has fun drinking it so you should buy it and have fun with everyone else.

Power, control or influence

Capability of doing or accomplishing something.

Appeals to self- esteem

A realistic respect for or favorable impression of oneself

Appeals to love

A profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person

Achievement

Something accomplished, especially by superior ability, special effort, great courage, etc.

Financial Gain

Status

Something accomplished, especially by superior ability, special effort, great courage, etc.

Remember

“Use of Persuasive Appeals (other than ethos)and Sound Reasoning”

IS on the rubric and worth 2.5 of your grade may not be big but it is heavily weighed after organization (3.5) research and credibility (3.0)

Creative use of multiple (in number and variety) identifiable persuasive appeals through the speech are utilized. Sound reasoning is applied and no fallacies are presented. (is the highest you can get in this category).

The easiest way to get an excellence is to bring in at least 2 or 3 emotional appeals (to get max points 3 or more are needed)
