The world has become increasingly digital and dynamic. Amidst this digitization, there are complexities that have been reported around the emerging technologies. 1 There are many digitally enabled networks and ecosystems that have fueled the digital complexity by fostering hyper-connections and mutual dependencies among human beings, technical artifacts, processes, organizations, and institutions. It can therefore be noted that this complexity is affecting human actors and their experiences in all dimensions. In this essay, I will highlight numerous emerging technologies that have become the norm in the increasingly becoming digital world. In this regard, I will point out the emerging technologies that are being witnessed in the digital space. 1 I will also delve into how the emerging technologies are impacting organizations. I will also discuss some of the actions that organizations ought to take in order to reduce the burden of digitalization. I will also point out the opportunities in the complex sociotechnical systems that have come with emerging technologies.

Emerging Technologies

Benbya, Nan, Tanriverdi, and Yoo (2020) highlight examples of some of the emerging technologies that have greatly impacted organizations. For instance, they note that there are transistors that have been produced in large numbers globally. 1 These transistors have enabled devices to be powered by microprocessors and connected by the internet. These transistors as noted in the article do not have to wait for commands. They are rather equipped with powerful artificial intelligence engines that enable them to act on their own. 1 As such, they are categorized as part of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and analytics.

As Benbya et al., (2020) note, there are also connected speakers that recommend different music playlists based on the time, location, and, of course, the people’s preference. Moreover, everyone with a smartphone uses a given social media network service. This enables every user to be a potential content creator on the internet. This content which is user-generated once created can be liked, shared, and mashed with other content by other users, consequently creating unpredictably complex forms of diffusions. On the same note, over 80% of movies watched on Netflix are said to be recommended by algorithms. In the transport and hospitality sector, digital platform ecosystems such as Uber and AirBnB are seeing to be connecting millions of users and providers globally. There are also symbol-based computation that are setting in motion the emergence of complex sociotechnical systems.

It is also notable from the article that there are also autonomous vehicles that are seen on the streets interacting with traffic signals that respond to changing traffic patterns, in the midst of human-controlled vehicles and pedestrians. Another emerging technology as noted in the article is the smart sprinklers that are connected to the weather service on the internet to control the amount of water on lawns. 2 Moreover, due to changing climatic and weather conditions, many houses are now being controlled by Nest connected to the Google Home Assist service. This is just a pointer of the inexhaustible list of emerging technologies that impacting the organizations.

1 How Emerging Technologies Are Impacting Organizations

Emerging technologies are impacting organizations in different ways. Organizations are for instance using emergence technologies to their management run well, seamlessly and smoothly. According to Borpujari, DeFilippis, Leonardi, and Polzer, (2020), the managements of these organizations are therefore reaping the benefits of emerging technologies. There is a positive effect on the organizations’ operations, productivity, profitability, and sustainability. 1 It is worth noting that these organizations banking on the technologies to make it easier for them to record and store their data, as well as reduce manual labor and errors in the workplace. It is also worth noting that these emerging technologies are greatly impacting the way customers interact with the organization because they are utilizing AIs in many aspects of their business and operations. It is also undeniable that emerging technologies AI and robotics being but examples are being employed by organizations to automate simple and repetitive tasks. They are also being used to make complex decisions with ease, quickly and more accurately through algorithms that are predictive.

It can also be noted that other emerging technologies such as social media networking are revolutionizing interactions in organizations. They have facilitated organizations to telework. Employees are able to work from home. They are also able to hold virtual meetings and conferencing at the comfort of their homes or offices with other elsewhere in the globe. They have made virtual meetings and teleworking a necessity rather than a possibility. There are also technologically demanding projects that have benefited greatly from these emerging technologies. The projects are programmed with timelines and success rates being preset (Chapa, & Rao, 2020). As a consequence, these emerging technologies have aligned organizations’ administration to the desirable outcomes reducing risks and burdens that would have resulted from the lack of these technologies. It can therefore be noted that emerging technologies are not only accelerating organizational digitization and progress, but also revolutionizing how organizations work in ways that have never been seen before.

3 Reducing the Burden of Digitalization in Organizations

Emerging technologies have brought with them a burden of digitization. There are reported chaos that are witnessed in organizations as a result of digitalization. It should be noted that the burden of responsibility in digitalization must be shared if the burden is to be reduced if not eliminated. Rather than balancing the digitalization workload, the multiple stakeholders who have a vested interest in emerging technologies in their organizations ought to bring their varied and differing perspectives to help solve attached issues (Jo, Sharma, Sicato, & Park, 2019). 1 Organizations can also reuse and maximize existing investments in legacy applications, staff skills, and infrastructure to increase return on investment with minimal risk. The organizations can also ensure that the emerging technologies that they choose are not phased out in the short term (Macnaghten, Davies, & Kearnes, 2019). Obsoleteness should come after a while of using the technologies. They can also upgrade to the next emerging technology that performs task better.

Conclusion

It can be concluded that emerging technologies are not anything that will be phased out but are here to stay. They will continue to energy each and every other day. 4 As digitalization disrupts organizations ever more profoundly, concern is growing about how it is affecting issues such as jobs, wages, inequality, health, resource efficiency and security. Therefore, organizations have no choice but to brace for the emerging technologies that are going to revolutionize their operations, interactions and businesses. As such they will reap the benefits of embracing technologies that emerge.
