Re: Final Project Proposal
Project Purpose
The purpose of this project is to review ideas and suggestions that could be used to improve wind
energy as a viable alternative to the coal energy. Wind is one of the most environment-friendly
ways of harvesting renewable energy. Recently, there have been reports that wind turbines are
killing hundreds of thousands of birds and bats around the world. There are estimates that
suggest that almost 368,000 birds die annually as a result of collision with the blades. Critics
have argued that cell or radio towers are just as likely to kill birds as a result of dangerous
collisions. In spite of this, it is necessary to address this problem given that wind is considered to
be one of the most important energy sources in a sustainable world. The project will propose
several ways of curbing this menace.
Project Product
Aman
The final product of this project is a 5-page paper that will include:
• A discussion of smarter siting for wind turbines as a possible solution to this problem;
• A review of technologies such as radar and ways via which it could be used to protect
birds;
• A discussion of GPS tracking as a possible solution to the collisions;
• Consideration of the economic impact of shutting off turbines when winds are slow.
Project Audience
The most important targets for this project are the wind energy companies that are currently
subjected to immense pressure with respect to killing birds and bats. Most of these companies
have set up their business with the aim of protecting the environment. It is unfortunate that they
have been faced with a new problem. The academia community of the university is also an
important target. The findings and discussions of this paper could potentially be used as part of
bigger academic projects.
