Effective Businss Communications… The “7Life Languages™” Way
Special discounted website: www.thekllp.com Special CODE: Richland
Introduction
Why would a student in a college-level management or business course be required to learn about communicating through the 7Life Languages™. Surely
you already know how to communicate i n order to be successful in the business world. Right? Perhaps that is true. But, learning to communicate through the 7 Behavioral Life Languages can possibly significantly i ncrease your chances to be
even more successful when i nteracting with others, not only in the business arena, but also i n your personal and social relationships as well. Remember,
these languages are “Life” languages; so they will affect every area of your life. Research consistently indicates that three of the fi ve most important work-related
skills that managers and employees at all levels withi n an organization need to master in order to be successful i n the world of work are (1) verbal ski lls ; (2) writing skills; and (3) interpersonal communication skills. Verbal skills reflect
one’s ability to clearly articulate and communicate personal/professional desires, needs, and wants in a manner that others will understand. Writing skills are
similar, although one has to be able to articulate his or her message in a written format that is appropriate for the audience you want to i nteract with. Interpersonal communication skills are those skills that reflect one’s ability to
generate and maintain positive, cooperative, producti ve worki ng and/or personal relationships with others. All three of these skills have one important thing in
common…the ability to effecti vely communicate with others.
Your Communication Shows Your Intelligence In the world of work, employees are often evaluated, to a large extent, based on
how well they are able to relate to others, i.e., co-workers, customers/clients, supervisors, etc., using the three skills mentioned in the previous paragraph. In
addition, in management termi nology, there are several different kinds or types of intelligence that are essential for employees to have i n order to successfully perform their jobs. In fact, more and more 21
st century organizations are looking
closely at several of these specific types of intelligence i n an effort to insure that employees are performi ng and interacti ng within appropriate organizational and
legal boundaries.
2
Effective Business Communications---The Life Languages Way---- Dr. Linda Morable, Professor
There are four specific kinds or types of intelligence that help determi ne how well we communicate with and can relate to others. Although we all display varying
degrees of each of these four types of intelligence, those individuals who truly learn to master them wi ll typically display excellent interpersonal communi cation
skills. The four kinds or types of i ntelligence are: cognitive i ntelligence, social intelligence, emotional intelligence, and cultural intelligence.
1. Cognitive Intelligence: Refers to a person’s ability to handle new
information, think rationally, and accurately analyze data. This type of
intelligence is often measured by traditional i ntelligence (IQ) tests. 2. Social Intelligence: Refers to one’s ability to effectively interact with
others.
3. Emotional Intelligence: Refers to one’s ability to identify, understand,
and manage emotions.
4. Cultural Intelligence: Refers to one’s awareness of cross cultural
differences and the person’s ability to function effecti vely i n environments
that i nclude i ndividuals from different cultures.
Most of us have probably observed or known indi viduals who may be brilliant
intellectually (cogniti ve intelligence), but who may have considerable problems in one or more of the followi ng areas: (1) relati ng to other indi viduals (social intelligence), (2) displayi ng empathy, sensitivity, and genui ne care when relating
to others (emotional i ntelligence), and/or (3) being a team player with others who are different from him/her (cultural intelligence). In fact, this may be a problem for
anyone, regardless to the cogniti ve i ntelligence level of the i ndividual. Learning about the 7Life Languages™, which i ncludes learning your own unique set of Life Languages, will give you considerable insight that may help to strengthen your
four types of intelligence i n the following ways: (A) Cognitive intelligence can be strengthened by givi ng you valuable
information that will assist you i n better understanding yourself and others. (B) Social intelligence can be strengthened by givi ng you valuable i nformation
that will assist you i n better understanding and interacti ng with others.
(C) Emotional intelligence can be strengthened by givi ng you i nsight regarding
more effective ways to identify and manage negative, destructive, and non-
producti ve emotions. (D) Cultural intelligence can be strengthened by providing information that will
assist you in more easily relati ng to i ndividuals from other cultures…since everyone, regardless to their cultural backgrounds, also communicates through
the 7Life Languages™.

The Life Languages and Your Class Project
As you examine each of the 7Life Languages™ through completing Phases 1, 2, and 3 of this project, reflect on the comments made about your own unique set of languages when reading your personalized Life Languages profile, and consider
how effecti vely you currently communicate through each language. If your rating for a particular language is “high”, chances are very good that you probably
demonstrate many of the positive characteristics of that particular language. If your rating is “moderate”, you perhaps demonstrate some of the positive characteristics of a particular language. And, if your rating for a particular
language is “low”, generally speaking, you probably will demonstrate few of the characteristics of that particular language.
However, the same can occur when analyzi ng some of the “distress signals” that research indicates are associated with each of the 7Life Languages™. If you are
demonstrati ng some of the negative behaviors that are associated with stressful situations for each of the languages, then you can make a concerted effort to
change those non-producti ve and possibly detrimental behaviors by fi nding more positive ways of communicating or relating to others while under stress or in stressful situations. In fact, more and more research i n the field of Management
and Organi zational Behavior reveals a significant increase in “deviant”, bully, and abusive behaviors from employee and managers in the workplace. These types

of behaviors clearly can and do adversely effecti ve producti vity, employee motivation and morale, overall team effecti veness, and organizational
camaraderie. Understandi ng yourself and others through the 7Life Languages™ can help to alleviate some of these negati ve, destructi ve behaviors.
Studying the languages can be a rewarding, fun, yet eye-opening experience. Remember that our overall behaviors wi ll typically reflect all 7Life
Languages™…rarely will one person communicate exclusively through any one language. It is also interesti ng to remember that the 7Life Languages™ profile
provides an accurate means of determi ning a person's behavioral language.
The 7Life Languages™ Overview
The 7 Life Languages™ have three categories, which are: Kinetic, Emoti ve, and

heads or hearts. People who speak emotive languages of INFLUENCER and RESPONDER
generally respond to life, people, stress, and values first with their hearts, then with their heads or actions. People who speak cognitive languages of SHAPER,
PRODUCER, and CONTEMPLATOR generally respond to life, people, stress, and values first with their heads, then with their hearts or actions.
Many times, what may appear to be management, racial, gender, class, or other diversity issues or even personality clashes really end up simply being
communication issues. The Kendall Life Languages Profile ™ can help identify the communication challenges and help build effective teams to achieve maximum efficiency in any organi zation. In fact, The 7 Life Languages™ and transcend the differences of culture, race, gender, age, economic status, and

Disclaimer The Life Languages profile provides an accurate means of determining a
person's behavioral language. The Kendall's Life Languages Profile is a communications analysis tool. It is not a psychological, personality, placement
or employment screening test. There are no right or wrong answers and no language is better than any other. Each person innately and unconsciously communicates and sees the world primarily through one of the seven Behavioral
Life Languages. The goal is to become established and fluent in your primary (number one) language and multi-lingual in the other six behavioral languages.
Knowing, understanding and applying the Life Languages is enjoyable and improves your communications skills. As you do this, you can become more confident, successful and find relationships more rewarding.
