Concept Sketch Questions for Chapter 4
To become familiar with how to construct a concept sketch, read through the concept- sketch guidelines posted under the Concept Sketch (How to) tab and view the short video describing how to construct a concept sketch. For additional help, view the example concept sketches.
For this exercise, you will submit one concept sketch of your choosing from the questions below. Each question below is derived from a Before You Leave This Page List in the textbook. You will submit all your sketches via Blackboard so make sure they are neat and legible and preferably one page in length. If we cannot read the words on your sketches, you will receive a score of one (1) for that question. It is critical that you describe the processes in your own words and not just copy from the textbook. Points will be deducted for verbatim answers. Please also check that your submissions have the right orientation. Points may be deducted for sketches that are submitted upside down or sideways. Numbers in parentheses indicate the section to which the item pertains (e.g., 4.1 is section 1 in Chapter 4).
Chapter 4: Earth History
• Sketch and label a series of diagrams depicting development of the three main types of unconformities (angular unconformity, nonconformity, and disconformity), and describe what sequence of events is implied by each type (4.2A, B, C). For this question, label the location of the unconformity, the youngest rock units, and the oldest rock units.
• Diagram a table depicting both the eras and periods of the geologic timescale. Indicate the date and explain the important events separating each era (there will be three dates) (4.6A). Also, describe (no sketch) the major types of fossils associated with the Paleozoic (4.9C), Mesozoic (4.10A, B), and Cenozoic Eras (4.10C).
