You must advance an argument about a specific aspect, or aspects, the documentary addresses and synthesize material from both of the source texts “The New Civil Rights” by Kenji Yoshino and “Letter from Birmingham Jail” by Martin Luther King Jr. The documentary covers a wide range of United States domestic concerns, including police tactics and training, police brutality, the justice system, the War on Drugs, relations between racial and ethnic communities, the immigrant experience, and urban uprisings. You must use arguments and supporting evidence from the documentary to discuss one or any combination of these concerns, and your argument must be supported by major aspects of the arguments from the essays by Yoshino and King.

You must:

Include a thesis statement that makes a specific, explicit, and debatable claim.

Correctly incorporate, cite, and frame quotations.

Include a conclusion that broadens the interpretation and speaks to why this new understanding matters.

The essay must be typed, double-spaced, with Times New Roman 12-point font, page numbers, and one-inch margins on all sides. Format according to MLA standards, including a left margin heading, and give the essay an appropriate title.
