Abstract

Due to advancements in technology, both teachers and parents are taking a proactive measure to introduce their children below the age of eight years to technology knowledge that can be integrated into their academics. Technology has both positive and negative effects on children. Children must be monitored to ensure they benefit from the technology and the use of the internet. The paper discusses the various support and barriers to using technology among school children aged 7 to 8. The main obstacles to teachers supporting technology in the education system are access platforms that compromise education to children since they are meant for entertainment purposes and not education-oriented. However, the technology can be applied to children to enhance their education through effective learning systems.

Introduction

Technology is now common in every part of the world. Technology is the integration of electronic devices that compose and ensure data across the globe can be obtained using an internet device such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Although the technology can enhance education among children, teachers have been reluctant to advocate its use to young children at a very early age (Attewell, Suazo-Garcia and Battle, 2003). For example, exposing children to technology may compromise their behaviour. Various researches on the influence of technology on children's academic progress indicate that exposing children to technology at an early age may negatively impact their social and academic progress. Research known as the American Speech-Language-Association that incorporated the views from parents and teachers indicated that children below the age of eight should not be exposed to technology without a proper framework. Additionally, the research revealed that most children are exposed to inappropriate technology that is counterproductive to their social, behavioural, and academic progress.

However, appropriate conversation and proper technological platforms such as developing a student portal can enhance education among young children. Teachers should be aggressive in implementing technologies that are more academic-oriented to students. Therefore, the level of technology usage among the students will depend on the technological-permeated environment. Teachers should focus more on reducing the negative social skills that the advancement in technology may impact. The main disadvantage of exposing children to early technological platforms that are not well monitored is poor behavior. The main challenge with technology is that most internet sites lack restrictions measures that would prevent children from accessing critical information such as pornographic movies. Although the application of technology is essential in supporting academic achievement, teachers must ensure that technology strikes a balance between academic and social skills. The research will explore that technological avenue such as development of student portal to access information that are just useful the student. The technological platform should consider the extra-curriculum activities to avoid children using all the time exploring the technology.

Research Topic

The topic is teachers' perception towards support and barriers to using technology among young children between the ages of seven and eight. The research topic requires discussion of the various obstacles that prevent teachers from supporting the technology used among children and the platform to eradicate the barriers and embrace the most effective technologies in supporting technology among the children.

The Rationale and the aim of the research

The research aims to enlighten the parents and the key stakeholders of various barriers preventing teachers from supporting technology both at home and in schools. The study will investigate the effects of technology on children's social skills. The research paper will also consider why teachers are reluctant to advise parents to expose their children to technology to a tender age. The research will also propose a technological measure that can effectively enhance education among children without exposing them to negative writing and pictures from the internet.

How can teachers embrace technologies such as student portals to enhance education among young children without exposing them to various negative aspects of technology such as pornographic in the cause of their learning?

Concept

Main barrier

The use of the internet is a critical factor in education, particularly in teaching children between 7 and 8. Students are social beings and need to have enough time to socialize with their peers. The main barrier is that technology among young children is highly addictive compared to adults. Therefore, children at the ages of 7 and eight are more likely to spend a lot of time on the internet, thus compromising the child's social life. The unity among children is critical, and it is created when children are playing or debating together. Most children are more likely to engage in games through the internet, thus less utilizing the technology for academic purposes (Beauchamp and Anderson, 2010). Therefore, technology compromises interpersonal interactions among children. Although the technology may help them pass the examination, it is likely to affect them in the future due to a lack of necessary skills to solve conflicts at the adult age.

Additionally, parents expose the children to technology by giving the young children smartphones, tablets, and computers. Most parents use technology pacifiers to avoid tantrums by their children. However, the process prevents children from engaging in other quality activities such as outdoor games, family members, reading, and sports. The additional barrier to implementing the technology among young children is the lack of a children's platform that can only be effective in children below the age of eight. For instance, when children explore the internet, they can access information that is not beneficial to their academic progress. For example, the use of play games may take a considerable time for their outdoor games, thus making them antisocial.

The other barrier to technological implementation among children is the framework of the curriculum. The education curriculum requires teachers to integrate technology in the classroom but is not provided with the resources and the methodology for implementing the technology. Teachers are not curriculum producers but implementers. When Mathematics was introduced in the education curriculum in the 1970s, teachers were provided with the necessary technology such as calculators to support the students. Therefore, the curriculum developers must provide the technology required to enhance learning among young children. The curriculum should be included in the curriculum to ensure teachers are incorporating the technology based on the nature of every topic.

The other barrier is the lack of enough resources to implement the technology fully in teaching young children. For instance, to ensure unauthorized users do not compromise critical information, critical infrastructure is required to install WiFi to enough constant accessibility to the internet services, computers, servers, and databases. Finally, the barrier is lack of leadership where most of the managers, particularly in the private sectors, are not professional teachers, thus failing to appreciate the advancement in technology in the education sector. The benefits of the technology can only be realized when teachers become aggressive to enhance the technological talent of children at a very tender age.

Teachers face a barrier to technological implementation, mainly when students are given assignments to handle with their parents at home. Students from low-income families may not afford technological devices, thus failing to support their children adequately. Additionally, some children who come from families are not available; thus, some students will not be assisted more likely.

Support

Technology is an integral part of the education curriculum to ensure that modern culture continues to grow in the future. There are many ways to enhance technological knowledge among children in elementary schooling. The teacher is responsible and accountable for supporting children from humble and wealthy backgrounds. Children at the age of 7 or 8 learn in different ways. Some families can adequately support their children, while others cannot be able to support their children due to financial challenges. Teachers are competent enough to transform the learning class into a technological environment with few resources. Technology has a positive impact on children and their adult lives.

The leading solution is to develop a student portal and provide a unique password to access the learning materials. The portal should incorporate views from teachers across the globe and allow students to interact with their peers. The primary purpose of the students' portal is to eradicate the boredom in everyday learning activities. The other benefit is breaking the classroom walls and enabling students to access more comprehensive information from other students. Teachers will introduce the benefits of video conferencing when connecting with their peers from another part of the world. The application of virtualization technology will enable children to have experiences with people from various tribes and areas that they have never been before.

The application of technology will promote visual learning, where students will be able to connect what they learn and what they see through videos or photos. For instance, a teacher can be able t show children videos on a snowcapped or volcanic mountain when discussing the physical features. Teaching technology to children will create an excellent foundation to enhance sciences and computer courses in the future.

Methodology

Qualitative research methodology

The qualitative research methodology will be used in the proposal paper. Many technical study areas use the approach to address the issues and solutions relating to technology (Tracy, 2019. The strategy must identify barriers and solutions based on the support and barriers pupils of ages 7 and 8 faces when utilizing technology. Because it has fewer phases and successfully reveals hidden factors during research, the method is most commonly used in computer and information technology. The collection and analysis of semi-structured and unstructured data constitute qualitative data. Most organizations rely on qualitative data since it is easier for everybody to understand its findings and conclusions. Qualitative data is descriptive data expressed in words, and discoveries are not always dependent on mathematics and statistics such as charts and graphs. As a result, qualitative data is used to gain initial knowledge, generate hypotheses, and interpret results. Open-ended questionnaires will be used to collect qualitative study data. The process entails identifying the participant, collecting data, storing it, and analyzing it.

Participants

The study will perform qualitative research on the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing technology among children aged seven to eight. The attendees will be parents, teachers, students, computer professionals, and curriculum writers. Participants will get an email confirming their participation. On the other hand, children will be chosen randomly because they play a minor role in the study. The participants' selection will be critical in increasing the result's reliability and validity. Following an assessment of the email details, random sampling will be used. The procedure will be non-discriminatory, allowing any participant to participate in the interview.

Data collection

Face-to-face communication between the interviewee and the interviewer will be the interview mode. All participants will be asked the same questions, and the interviewer will be obliged to stay focused on the questions. Other researchers' suggestions will be used to develop the questions. The question will be how a child between the ages of 7 and 8 can use technology to help them learn better. In addition, the participants will be expected to identify technology implementation barriers and solutions. The research will also look at the internal and external elements that determine how technology is implemented in children's education. Culture, public policy, technology, social economics, and demographics are some of the subcategories of external variables. Psychological processes such as semiotics, self-image, motivation, perception, learning, and attitude all have an internal influence.

Data storage

Data preservation is crucial because the data is intended to be utilized as a guide for education curriculum writers, instructors, and parents. Data should be stored in a secure environment protected against intruders, theft, and damage. A hybrid cloud computing platform is the most acceptable technology for storing data. Black hat hackers are less likely to target cloud computing technology. If an attacker penetrates one storage technology, the data should be backed up in servers and data-based as a preventative step. Only high-integrity interviewers will be needed to review the data and deliver accurate information on demand. To prevent malware from deleting the data stored, firewalls and antivirus software should be installed on the servers and databases. To manage access to the technological infrastructure, biometric technologies such as iris and face scanning should be used.

Data analysis

The data collected will be analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach. The analytical method (IPA) is the most successful based on the research question and interviewing my respondents since it evaluates the respondents' life experiences, such as how educators fail to achieve their goals and objectives utilizing outmoded technologies. As a result, the analytic data method will not rely on theoretical data from an earlier study.

Teaching materials

There are hundreds of thousands of technologies available for educators to teach children between the ages of 7 and 8. The main proposal is to transform the typical classrooms with technological infrastructure. For instance, a standard class involves a teacher standing in front of the class and providing instruction to students. The students in their notebooks copy the instructions from the teacher. If some students cannot understand critical information, the teacher utilizes the blackboard to elaborate on the problematic central points.

The other common teaching materials include textbooks and pie charts. I propose teachers replace outdated teaching materials such as textbooks and worksheets with spelling games (Cox, 2017). The spelling games should be selectively downloaded and stored in the school database. The classroom virtual technological resources are more effective in teaching young children since children learn through watching than reading. Research shows that virtual materials such as the spelling game could remain in the children's memory than the actual reading from the books. The teaching material should be stored in the main database accessible to children and their parents through strong passwords. Therefore, I propose teachers incorporate the computer experts in developing an effective student portal that could allow the students to access learning materials through the internet anywhere they are provided they are connected.

Teachers should conduct a research and development MS project and timelines to complete a topic with the students. The research is essential to filter the most effective learning materials for children between 7 and 8. The materials can also be extracted by incorporating parents and the curriculum developers through surveys, interviews, reviews, and product information. Since the project can be overwhelming, the teachers will research during the school holiday.

The program will require a lot of time resources, mainly due to benchmarking from schools with similar projects. The program will also require feedback from various stakeholders, such as the school administration and the curriculum developers (Jason, Danielewicz and Mesina, 2005). The main challenge is that some of the teachers are computer illiterate and thus likely to be exposed to some of the technological courses before being involved in developing the student portal. As a result, some teachers may be having a negative notion when implementing the project. It is critical to note that teachers can be very reluctant in implementing the technology, mainly when they have not implemented the project for long.

The computer developers should ensure that the student portal incorporates a communication platform for students, teachers, and parents. The student portal will ensure that teachers and parents can communicate how to improve the performance of students based on the assessment progress. The student portal should involve applying biometric technology such as iris scanning, facial scanning, and fingerprint recognition. The application of fingerprint recognition will allow students, parents, and teachers to access the student portal through fingerprints. Fingerprints are unique, and therefore no unauthorized user will be able to access the student portal. It should also support other biometric technologies such as iris and face scanning.

Data security is the primary concern in any organization storing its data in various databases. Teachers should ensure that the assessment records should remain secure. The process enables students to understand data security needs in the technological field. The other way to enhance data security is to provide backup for examinations, learning materials, and assessment records in cloud computing technologies. Cloud computing technology is an emerging technology that is less vulnerable to attacks. The technology not only allows security to massive information but also enables the teachers to analyze their progress in implementing the technology to young children.

Implementation of the student portal

The student portal will be used to achieve various technological goals. The portal will be used to store the deal of every teacher based on hobbies, interests, and specialization. If the parent has any questions to ask, a teacher will be elementary to access the information from a specific teacher. The portal will be essential since students will be able to access learning materials through the internet and ask any questions when they get difficulties. The portal will also contain parents' contact details to collaborate between parents and teachers.

The student portals will also be effective, particularly when giving an assignment that involves the intervention of the parents. Students can do their tasks and submit the assignment in the portal for teacher review and comments during the school holiday. Through research and development, teachers can post various learning materials through the portal for students and parent review (Kaldor, 2016). The portal should also incorporate security features such as antivirus to malware to prevent data damage through malware. The security measure should prevent technological learning materials that have been changed from the traditional forms. The students at the age of 7 and 8 should be able to access the database, and therefore should the student portal should be user-friendly and entertaining. The student portal should be allowed to move to the next level based on the analysis and performance. The student should be designed to be automated there, providing actual performance data per student.

Ethics Concerns

Integrity is the main ethic concern in implementing technology in the classroom environments. For instance, teachers as role models need to safeguard the safety and integrity of the students' information (Hicks, 2011). For example, student data should not be shared to be part of the research and development to a third party without the consent of both the parents and the concerned student. In addition, the parent should be involved during the biometric technology implementation. For instance, if the teachers intend to use face-scanning methods to access the student portal, the parents should be aware of regular updates of the facial features as a student continues to grow while changing most facial outlooks.

Conclusion

Based on my research proposal, the development of a student portal will enhance students' performance between 7 and 8. The information gathered for the proposal has ascertained that implementing the student portal will enable students to log in to the system when required by the children. The portal will prevent students from accessing information that may compromise their behavior and social skills. Through the portal, the teacher will switch off the entire system and allow students to play and interact with their peers. The teacher will also be able to evaluate the strength and weaknesses of every individual based on the automated results from the student portal. The student portal will also be designed to assess the extra-curriculum activities. The overall performance will be the average between the academic and extra-curriculum activities. Parents should take an active role of ensuring that children are only using the computer or phones for the academic purposes.
