Assignment 2: Legal Issues Paper (40 marks, 20% of course grade)

Introduction

You are to research and choose a legal case on an issue concerning a school or school district in British Columbia. Your review of the case should summarize the issue, the decision, and the reasons for the decision.

Assignment 2 is due November 19

Instructions

1. Research and choose a legal case concerning a school or school district in British Columbia. You can do this through the database:

www.canlii.org

choose “British Columbia” under Browse

enter “school” or “school district” in the Document text search field

click on the “cases” tab (which will filter out legislation)

You should see a list of over 27,000 cases. You can continue to filter by choosing the tribunal. You can choose “courts”, “labour”, or “human rights”.

Look through the cases to find one that is interesting to you.

2. Write a summary of the case. Briefly describe the issue, the decision, and the reasons for the decision, and share your observations and reflections about what you learned. Connect your observations and reflections to relevant course content and your experience. Indicate what you have learned and how you will apply this learning in the future.

Length and Format

Your paper should be 400-500 words in length, double-spaced and should follow APA formatting.

Components to Include in Your Review

Introduction

Introduce the case by explaining why you chose it. Give a brief summary of the issue addressed in the case.

Decision

Summarize the decision of the Tribunal and the reasons for the decision

Connections Between Theory and Practice

How does the decision in the case apply to your context or other educational management contexts??

Lessons Learned

What have you learned from the case that you will take forward into your own leadership/management?

References

Of course, the case you have chosen must be cited. However, other ideas and quotes from literature or other resources should be cited using APA format and referenced at the end of your paper in APA style.

Any material that is directly quoted from the literature or other sources must be enclosed in quotation marks or formatted as a block quotation, properly cited, and referenced at the end of your paper in APA style. Paraphrased materials must also be acknowledged and cited.

Submission Requirements

Submit your final version to Dr. Churchley by email, paper copy handed in person, or through the Moodle assignment. You may re-submit only one assignment for remarking in this course. Therefore, if you have questions about the assignment or your writing, you must seek help from me or from the TRU Writing Centre BEFORE the assignment is due.
