The purpose of this paper is to develop a unit planning template. This unit plan will be

prepared for a third-grade class. It will cover the State Standards in mathematics. The template

can then be used to implement a lesson plan. This lesson plan will incorporate technology in

various forms to aid in instruction. For example, video game type lessons can provide a fun

experience for learning, while being a safe environment to make mistakes, learn, and improve

from (Donovan, 2018). A well-prepared lesson plan will guide the teacher’s instruction while

satisfying the State Standards and keeping the lesson on track.

Unit Title Rounding Numbers

Unit Summary

This unit will be working with understanding the place values of numbers, rounding numbers

to the nearest 1, 10, or 100. I will start with showing a place value chart on the white board.

We will go over our place values at the beginning of the lesson. We will watch a Brain Pop

video on rounding numbers. I will then spend some time on the smart board demonstrating

rounding of numbers. I will ask the class to help me round a number that I have drawn to the

nearest 1, 10, 100… I will rotate 3 groups of students between 3 stations for 10 minutes each.

The stations will consist of direct teacher instruction, computer math games, and independent

worksheet practice. I will have the students practice on a worksheet to turn in. I will have a

lesson where the students all get to use computer games to round numbers.

KUD Objectives

K- Students will know place values of numbers to one thousand. They will know how to round

numbers to the nearest 1, 10, & 100.

U- Students will understand the concepts that are related to rounding numbers. They will

understand the place value for numbers up to the thousands. Students will understand how to

round numbers to the nearest one, ten, or hundred. Students will understand how to operate the

computer and program for math games and quizzes.

D- Students will practice these concepts together in class. Students will practice these concepts

on a computer program. They will complete daily practice worksheets on material covered in

class. Students will take a test on the material covered at the end of the week.

Formative Assessments

• Formative assessment will be done as we learn in class. To start with, I will ask my

students how many of them know how to round numbers already. This will access

some of their prior learning skills. I will use the smart board to direct the class while I

call on individuals to give the correct answer. I can use dry erase boards for each

student to write their answers on and show. These types of formative assessments will

let me know how much the students are understanding, and how much, or what, I need

to go over more of. The computer games will give the students immediate feedback on

their right and wrong answers, allowing them to make corrections and, as a result,

immediate learning from it.

Summative Assessments

• Daily summative assessments will be made by students completing a quick check of

ten problems at the end of class. For a final summative assessment, I will issue a

written test with 30 questions and a combination of rounding numbers and multiplying

by 10s. I will be looking for accurate answers. I will give 15 minutes to complete the

test. I will be looking for how many could complete in the time allowed. I will be

looking for how many need more instruction on the subject.

I have pulled these work sheets from education.com to have the students do one a day for a

week. These worksheets will be accompanied by teacher instruction and Brain Pop videos on

this subject.

Technology Integration

The smart board will be used to enhance the learning of this lesson. I will be demonstrating on

the smart board examples of rounding numbers. Tablets or Google Pads will be used by the

students to access math games and assessments on. Students will be given ten minutes on the

tablets, ten minutes on the written work, and ten minutes of teacher instruction.

In this lesson I will combine technology, direct instruction, and student collaboration to

learn about rounding numbers. The main objective is to offer diversified methods of learning to

accomplish our educational goals. The material that has been selected satisfies our State

Standards for this lesson. I give a variety of methods to learn this topic. The lessons are set up for

frequent formative assessments, as well as summative assessments. The online games offer

students immediate feedback on their performance and allow them to make corrections

instantaneously. Therefore, students can learn at a faster rate by recognizing errors and

correcting them immediately. Putting all of these resources together will give a well-rounded

educational experience and keep the course on track.
