- EDU 284 LESSON PLAN EDU 284 LESSON PLAN
- How to create and implement
- You will submit two forms for each lesson plan
- They are titled Lesson Plan Form 1 and Lesson Plan Form 2.
- Both must be complete and turned into Blackboard.
- Choosing your topicChoosing your topic
- First you want to pick a topic that will ensure your success
- Pick a topic that is specific and is based on the children’s interests
- For example, instead of Transportation, select Wheels. Transportation is too broad to examine in the one morning you have to teach
- not select seasonal or holiday themes
- Choosing developmental Choosing developmental indicatorsindicators
- Then you have to decide what it is you want children to learn about your topic.
- Think about the age of the children and their abilities
- continue the example of wheels, are you interested in the shape, size, purpose, types, etc.
- Pick one or two areas to focus on to be successful
- Choosing developmental Choosing developmental indicators cont.indicators cont.
- Then decide on the developmental indicators you are going to address
- You will need a developmental indicator for each box on the Planning Forms
- These are from the NC Foundations for Early Learning and Development
- This link is located in the Resources>Useful Links for this Class section of this course
- Developmental indicators Developmental indicators cont.cont.
- Continuing with the wheels topic, for a classroom of 4 year olds
- Early Learning Goal CD-11 (page 139 in the document
- The Developmental Indicator CD11p (color, shape, size, small to large, short to tall, etc.) would be appropriate
- This was copied and pasted directly from the NC Early Learning Standards document

- Lesson Plan Form 2Lesson Plan Form 2
- The previous slides show one of the forms you will use (either IT or Preschool)
- You will select items to add, in addition to the existing items, that will allow children to learn about the study topic selected and practice the developmental indicator.
- For example, I would list dump trunks, and fire trucks in the section under blocks for the study topic of Wheels.
- Lesson Plan Form 2Lesson Plan Form 2
- not list activities, list the items.
- Include the Developmental Indicator in each box also.
- Example:
- BLOCKS
- dump trucks
- fire trucks
- 11n
- Lesson Plan Form 2Lesson Plan Form 2
- Fill in every day, and include the specific Developmental Indicator in each box.
- specific
- This is where you explain your teaching in more detail
- Think about a substitute teacher using your form, would they know what to do.
- Large Group TimeLarge Group Time
- List songs you will sing , for example “Wheels on the Bus”
- List concepts or changes to the learning centers you want the children to notice. For example, “In the Discovery area today you will find wheels to sort and pictures of all kind of wheel to look at. In the art area there are vehicles for you to paint with using their wheels and paint.”
- List the actual book you will read, give the title and author
- Five Little Monkeys Wash the Car by Eileen Christelow
- Small Group activitySmall Group activity
- This is where you describe the activity you would do with the children as you work one-on-one or with a small group
- For the wheels topic, you may have the children roll various size wheels down a ramp and measure which one goes fastest or farthest, then create a graph chart with the children
- Special ActivitiesSpecial Activities
- is not necessary to fill this one out unless you have something meaningful. You may have a parent or staff that has a vehicle with large wheels that could be parked in a safe area. The children could make wheel rubbings. Or a truck driver may come speak to the children
- Lesson Plan Form 1Lesson Plan Form 1
- Complete the Lesson Plan Form 1
- This form is intended for you to think deeply about your teaching, it is not necessarily one that you will use in your programs.
- You will submit this form along with Lesson Plan Form 2 into blackboard for each lesson plan.
- Lesson Plan Form 1Lesson Plan Form 1
- List Specific Developmental Indicators by the corresponding letters and numbers in the NC Foundation book
- Materials/supplies: List all the supplies and materials you will use that are not already in the learning centers. For example, if you are using the art center there should already be paint brushes, paper, crayons, markers. List what you are adding.
- Lesson Plan Form 1Lesson Plan Form 1
- Goals Addressed
- List the specific Goal directly from the NC Foundations. These should match the wording exactly. This will help you become familiar with the Goals the Developmental Indicators show.
- Lesson Plan Form 1Lesson Plan Form 1
- Extensions – this is where you list several additional activities. This is important because it is better to be over-prepared, than underprepared. These activities should be ready to go.
- The children may finish sooner than expected. What will you do with them if you have extra time?
- Lesson Plan Form 1Lesson Plan Form 1
- Open-ended questions: List at least 3 questions you will ask as you work with them in the learning centers or during small group time. Do not use yes/no questions.
- What do you think will happen next?
- How will you make the paint show the tire print?
- Which wheel do you think will roll the fastest?
- How do you know those wheels match?
- Summing it up!Summing it up!
- Submit 2 forms with each lesson plan, Lesson Plan Form 1, Lesson Plan Form 2.
- Keep your topic simple, not too broad, no seasonal or holiday topics
- Use the NC Foundations for Early Learning and Development
- Run your ideas by me. I love to talk about your topics
- Watch the children, they will give you ideas about what they interested in.
