Ethical Decision-Making Model (“EDMM”) – individual writing assignment
DUE: Tuesday, March 9, 2021
WHY THIS ASSIGNMENT?
The goal of this assignment is for you to set out and explain your personal ethical values, the processes you will undertake to resolve ethical dilemmas, and how you will evaluate your performance in adhering to your values and process for ethical decision-making.
SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES AND DESIRED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
· Understanding and applying ethics concepts in healthy organizational relationships
· Understanding and applying your ethical values and well-informed ethical decision-making processes in personal and professional contexts
THE ASSIGNMENT:
This individual writing assignment is to create your own personal “Ethical Decision-Making Model.”
The assignment Design your Ethical Decision-Making Model. It should be clear, concise and compelling so you can remind yourself of it every day. Please include:
(1) The set of personal ethical values you rely on to make ethical decisions. After stating each value, briefly explain why these values are important to you (30 percent)
(2) A brief identification of the steps (or your “process”) for making ethical decisions. (30 percent) [Note: While your process might include how you use your ethical values in your decision-making, your “process” should not simply re-state your values – your process is something more and different.]
On a second page, please explain the following:
(3) Provide one or two very clear examples of how your Ethical Decision-Making Model will successfully work (or perhaps how it has already worked) in your real-life ethical dilemmas. (20 percent)
(4) Explain how you will evaluate your performance and hold yourself accountable to your EDMM. (20 percent)

FORMAT DETAILS:
· 100 points are possible: Grading rubric is included below.
· Length: Your EDMM should be sufficient in length to fully address all elements of the assignment. About 850 words (approximately 3 ½ pages) may be a good rule of thumb; more is certainly OK but less may be insufficient to fully address all elements of the assignment.
· Word Count: Please include this at the bottom of your EDMM’s last page.
· Helpful Course Materials: I have provided references to relevant course materials in “Helpful Resources from the Course,” below. These are to encourage your ideas on how to construct your own EDMM. I have posted additional resources in the EDMM Resources folder and you may locate others on your own.
· Using Outside Sources: Always remember to give attribution to any outside sources you use in your writing. Using outside sources to inform your work is always OK; however, you must properly cite them to avoid plagiarism.
· Careful Editing: “Review” features in document creation software (such as Microsoft Word) include a “Word Count” function, along with “Spelling & Grammar” check – I recommend using both. They are not perfect; you will need to do your own careful editing before you submit your assignment.
HELPFUL RESOURCES FROM THE COURSE:
Textbook Chapters on Ethics: Broad ethics concepts are discussed in textbook Chapter 5 – Ethics and Ethical Reasoning. In Chapter 6 – Organizational Ethics, we looked at various ethics concepts including several important “ethical safeguards” which businesses or other organizations might use to encourage and guide ethical conduct in the workplace. Might any of these “organizational” ethics tools be adapted for personal use in your decision-making? For example, consider the following examples of organizational codes of ethics (or conduct). Do these help you think about what your personal EDMM might address?
· REI (factory) Code of Conduct:

· The Code of the West: http://cowboyethics.org/cowboy-ethics/
· Or perhaps a code of ethics you’ve encountered in your own work or other experience
Other Decision-Making Models and Processes: We have examined other decision-making processes that might help inform your own approach on ethical decision-making. For example:
· “Stakeholder analysis” [i.e., who is affected by a decision, how are they affected and what actions are appropriate in response?] (Textbook Ch. 1, The Corporation and its Stakeholders, pp. 11-16)
· The “public issues management process” [i.e., issue identification, analysis, options, implementation, evaluating the results] (Textbook Ch. 2, pp. 33-36)
· Four “methods” of ethical reasoning [i.e., virtues, utilitarian, rights, justice] – (Textbook Ch. 5, pp. 107-111) – adapt one, a few, or all four for use in your ethical decision-making?
GRADING RUBRIC:
The grading rubric is based on the assignment’s two parts and their sub-parts detailed above. I will use this rubric to evaluate your work and determine your score on this assignment. Again, 100 points are possible based on how well you achieve the following Assignment Objectives.
Assignment Objectives:

(2) /30 – You succinctly set out the steps (or process) for your ethical decision- making.
