Reflection on “The Bane of the Internet”
Introduction
Ha Jin's "The Bane of the Internet" illustrates the plight of the Chinese immigrants in the U.S. Jin sets a tone in the short story where a young woman who had immigrated to U.S. finds that e-mail ties her too close to her home, and to a sister who makes always makes demand of her. It is that way for all protagonists of Jin who wind up being trapped by their lineage and are unable to start a fresh in the land opportunity that all though they were going to. Jin sets out in his story that most Chinese immigrants in the United States of America can even go for a week without even speaking in English. Some of the immigrants prefer it that way, but others who hoped to form a more forceful breaking the tie with china find the place an insufficient breath of fresh air. I love how Ha Jin elaborated on the way her sister was being tortured by her husband, the kind of life that she started living after they had divorced with her husband. This means that no one should be a captive of their unsuccessful marriages. If the marriage seems not to be working well, then they should quit.
Sisterhood Love
Despite the conditions, sisterhood love is paramount to the lives of the people. Love is usually shown when two people frequently communicate with one another. The author understands how love is important and the joy that it can bring to the lives of people. Despite the time that the mails too before they could deliver, the author and her sister did not get bored with communicating with one another (Jin. 590). This should be reflected in the general society that whenever two people love each other, then they should be willing to communicate with each other frequently.
Marriages
The short story “The Bane of the Internet” has helped illustrate the challenges that most of the marriages go through. The story enlightens us that although people are together, it does not mean that they are happily married. Some chaos takes place within the marriages that are never known by the people outside the marriage. One of the main issues that can result in troubles within a marriage is the drunkenness (Jin. 590). This most case affects the husbands, and it eventually results in violence. This was evident when the husband used to drink and become violent to her wife.
Divorce
Most of the families today are experiencing divorce because of one reason or the other. The main reason for divorce in the world of today is unfaithfulness in marriages. The author tried to illustrate this by expressing how the husband of her sister was unfaithful to their marriage and that she always cheated with his boss. Most cases of unfaithfulness and that has caused a lot of divorces are a result of the husband, and the unfaithfulness starts from the place of work (Jin. 591). Despite the conditions of the marriage, people should stay together mostly when they had taken a lot of time together, like in the case of the story where the marriage had lasted for over five years.
Life after Divorce
The author used the life of her sister to illustrate how life could be after people who had some misunderstandings have divorced. In most cases, when the resin for the divorce is as a result of the husband, then in most cases, the wife progresses well with her life. Patience is important in a marriage, and this was shown in the story when Yunchin had lived with her husband for all that while when they were having issues (Jin. 591). Once the couple has divorced, it is usually very rare for the woman to be associated with another marriage. They are always filled with fear that the same things might happen again. People should also not do things that might hurt their ex-husbands of wives, and still, they should not be doing things just for the sake of showing their ex-partners. Once people have divorced, that is a sign of a new beginning, so they should never look back to where they came from. This was shown by the author in the story when Yunchin wanted to do things to prove to her ex-husband how successful she had started to become.
Being Satisfied With What We Have
We should all live a life that we are all contended that we can afford. Taking loans or borrowing money from other people would always lead us into trouble. Wanting to buy things that we are sure that we cannot afford is what because of all this trouble. This case has been illustrated in the story when Yunchin wanted to buy a car, yet she did not have enough money to buy it, so she decided to borrow the money from her elder sister (Jin. 591). Being an understanding of life is very important. This generally means understanding others. Whenever we seek something from the hem, and they are not capable of providing it, we should always be understanding and not just get frustrated. The author reminds us of this virtue by showing us the case of Yunchin when she needed to borrow some amount, and when she could not get it, she starts getting frustrated (Jin. 591). Living our lives to impress others is one factor that drags many people behind. This is because one might think that they are in a competition but forget that everyone has their fortune in this life.
Desperation in Life
People should never be desperate for some luxurious things or even having the desire to live a life that they cannot afford. This kind of desperation is the one in most cases that would result in people wanting to sell some of their body organs. This has been illustrated by the author when a young, healthy woman was ready to sell the body parts that they can afford to buy a car. People should be contented with the kind of life they are living, and if they cannot afford the expensive life, then they should do away with it. Once an older person has seen such a situation is about to happen, then he or she should take the responsibility of advising them that what they are doing is not the right way (Jin. 592). Even if it means taking away the rights of the person of accessing the internet, then that is what should happen to save the life of the person that you care a lot about.
Conclusion
In my thought, anyone would appreciate the story “the bane of the internet” because the author is an excellent thinker. The author is instructive on a model, a way of an idea about the marriage, as well as communication that everyone in modern society needs to be rooted in. Although marriage is a private issue as well as communication, it is important for the issues surrounding marriage to be communicated so that everyone in the society can understand it clearly. Once the issues surrounding most of the marriages that might result in divorce have been evident, there is always a need to ensure that the community is alerted to take precautions. The story has as well helped in informing the general society that they should be contented with whatever they have and that they should not be greedy of some of the things that they cannot afford. The elderly in society must be willing to guide the siblings in the decisions that they are making in their lives.
