EDE 5267: More Observation Guideline Dr. Spears-Bunton
The following is intended to supplement guidelines provided in the syllabus:
1. On the top of your observation report provide the following: Date; beginning & ending time of observation; day, day of the week, name of the locality; any specific usage of the place e.g. parking lot, bus stop etc.
2. A brief geographic identification so that a newcomer or stranger could find the place you are describing.
Identify your primary focus or intent, for example to gather a general picture & understanding; observe people movement; observe a particular group of people; describe buildings and setting etc.
3. Identify 1-3 unique characteristics such as a stadium, clock tower, unusual architecture or landmark.
4. Identify where you are standing while taking notes.
5. Weather conditions.
6. Your previous familiarity with this space. For example I grew up here; have not been here for 20 years.
7. Is there anything that strikes you as unusual, curious, remarkable, inviting or scary? Describe.
