Module 3 – Privacy, Etiquette and Ethics in Social Media

A quick thank you to Dr. Nicholas Zaparyniuk for the content of this course. ”Dr. Zap” is the creator of this version of this course.

PRIVACY

Assume NOTHING is private on social media (privacy settings on any device should not be considered truly “private”)

Assume that anything you post online is there forever

Make sure you don’t plagarize or use copyrighted material

Your social media presence is a reflection of who you are… everything from political or religious opinions down to your grammar is being judged online…

Don’t misguide or lie, it will always come back to get you in the end.

OPEN SOURCE INTELLIGENCE

Your information on social media is considered

“Open Source Intelligence”

If it’s on the web and in a network its available for ANYONE to see!

This can affect your ability to get work, your credibility or reputation

This is historical information about your online activity

This is a reason why stolen identity is a major problem!

PHISHING (Protect your identity)

People, pages, places, check-ins, friends, tags, objects, locations and times.

Can search details eg. Places that friends have been, relationship status, favourite foods, friends of friends.

PROTECT YOURSELF!

Turn off the GPS on your photos, where you live, posting about your kids, property, valuables etc.

Make sure that kids or other vulnerable people know how to protect themselves online.

CONCEAL YOUR IDENTITY

Identity: Create user accounts with a fake name (try www.fakenamegenerator.com!)

User accounts/email: have a dummy email not connected to you, your work.

Almost Anonymous

Computer : VPN – Virtual Private Networks – hide your IP address

Web browser: Firefox & Chrome plugins (Private) etc.

Phone: prepaid cell phone, Burner App, Hushed App etc.

Money: Prepaid credit cards, cryptocurrencies.

ETIQUETTE

Etiquette: a code of behaviour that delineates expectations for social behaviour according to conventional social norms within a society, social class or a group.

Ethics: or moral philosophy is the branch of philosophy that involves systemizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct.
