Read the books and write a 4-5 page paper connecting this book you chose to 3 for American Culture and Education;Civil Rights; Discrimination and implicit bias;
This is a very open assignment. You must make connections between course content and education. The connection might be via the student’s experience or the teacher’s perspective. The connection might be as a future educator evaluating the book (fiction or nonfiction) for connections to what we studied in this course.

The idea behind this project is to examine thoroughly a book through the lens of a multicultural educator who is aware of concepts like implicit bias, community funds of knowledge, and culturally responsive teaching (or the other topics we have discussed in this course).

You can understand what the book says through the movie. But you must accurately cite specific examples in the book.
In your project, address three of the following topics. Choose three that relate TO your book choice. Do not choose one and then explain that it is “not present” in your choice. Be selective!
· If there are teachers present in this novel, what is their role? How do these teachers address and acknowledge the challenges of their students and/or their own implicit biases?
· Is the education depicted informal, as in learned in a non-traditional setting? If so, describe how it connects to an idea presented in this class.
· How are culturally diverse students depicted? How do the teacher, students, and others interact with these students?
· How are economically diverse students depicted?
· How does this book depict students who have undergone significant trauma? Are there characters in these books that interact in a compassionate and culturally relevant manner?
· What are the stereotypes and prejudices directed at diverse student populations in this book?
· If there were teachers depicted in this book, were they prepared for a multicultural classroom? What qualified them to be reliable multicultural teachers?
· What attention is paid to understanding a child’s home culture? Is the home culture valued or respected in the classroom or school setting?
· What learning and teaching styles are depicted in this book?
· What classroom or school environment supports are depicted in this book?
· Other ideas? If there is something specific to your book, let me know BEFORE you submit this assignment.
You must include:
· Each topic (you must explain 3) must be supported by a minimum of three examples (total of 9). These examples must include at least one quote from the book, with the remaining examples coming from course materials (textbook, TED Talks, articles, etc.)
· You must include at least 1 quote for each topic you introduce from the list above. Explain thoroughly, using evidence from this course, how the quotes (3 total) connect the topics to the book.
· Evidence from this course must be properly cited as you introduce it.
· You must include a works cited page. Each source you reference in the paper must be included on this works cited page.
· Your work must be free of punctuation and capitalization errors. Remember that book titles are italicized.
· Relevant vocabulary (see study guide for exam over textbook) must be included when applicable.
Length: 4-5 pages
Must cite sources using MLA format. Use in-text citations and include a works cited page as the last page (in addition to 4-5 pages of content).
