What to include in your 3-5 page paper (3 full pages minimum – does not include reference page)
1. Class, Title & Your Name – Repeat the Ed161-Final Paper-YOUR NAME at the top on the first page (you do not need to include a separate title page or separate abstract).
2. Introduction of Paper – Write 1 paragraph to start your paper defining and describing your paper’s topic theme (this was the group theme assigned to your Discussion Presentation Team). Next, write how your topic directly relates to social development theory by giving background information on where it fits in and why it’s important/has an impact on some aspect of social emotional development in students (i.e., impact on attributions, achievement, peer interaction, etc.). [Hint - theory information can be found in our class textbook or you may cite information from the Tie-in Readings, or your article. Reference information on our Textbook and our Tie-In Readings is listed in the class syllabus. These should be cited using APA formatting if you are referring to them in the paper.]. Lastly, lead into the sub-area of current research on this topic. This last sentence should be a connector sentence introducing what research you found in your 3 articles (your mini-review of current research) on this topic.
3. Main Body of Paper – Write 3-6 paragraphs on the 3 different research articles you have read related to this topic theme. Briefly describe the research studies and their findings (i.e., authors, year published, study topic, type of person studied, what they studied or what intervention they tried, and major outcome / recommended or outcome of the study). After you write about the first article, connect it to the other two articles with lead in sentences. Compare / contrast the findings (do they agree, contradict, does one build on another in the ways they’re tackling the issue, are they recommending the same strategy as useful, or are they taking a different angle or working with a different population, etc.).
Article Requirements
a) One article can be the article you found and used for your Discussion Presentation.
b) The other two articles may not be ones used by your team during their presentation, but should be new journal articles you either found in our “article basket” or journal articles you looked up online.
c) All three articles should relate directly to your topic theme.
d) Research articles should have recent dates (ideally last 10 years, but should be at least since 2000) unless you have prior permission from the TA or it is an article from our article basket.
e) Research articles should be from professional publications (i.e., juried journal publications). No blogs newspaper editorials, or opinion pieces. A meta-analysis (a summary of other research findings published in a journal or not for profit professional organizations trade publication for a given type of intervention is acceptable if pre-approved by your TA or is from our article basket.)
4. Assess & Generalize Current Research – In a final paragraph or two, elaborate and evaluate the compare/contrast assessment you have been making on the three article’s research information. Discuss the specific implications of the information you have learned from these three articles on social development in education in your given topic area. Specifically, state the possible positive impact on student learning, or teachers, or teaching this knowledge could have. Give an example of what this impact could look like (or how it could be applied in the future). Support your conclusion with specific evidence.
5. References & APA Citations - Use American Psychological Association (APA) formatting to refer to any textbooks, tie-in readings, or articles referenced in the body of your paper. (You do not have to cite our lectures – instead cite all key theories and research where they come from our textbook, tie-in readings, and articles.) Also include an APA formatted reference page at the end. Reference page is not counted as one of the 3-5 pages.
