Though James Damore really committed a very big mistake in tarnishing the image of Google through his memo, his firing appears not to be ethical considering some of the factors that were not taken into consideration to reach the decision of his firing. To begin with, Google opted not to serve Damore with a firing notice, which is considered among the ethical steps when firing an employee. Due to lack of warning therefore, may term the termination as being unlawful (Moriarty, 2018). In addition, Google’s CEO expressed some sort of dictatorship such that the employees are not allowed to air their concerns, therefore, the termination qualifies to be unethical because, Damore expressed himself in a contrary way that didn’t go well with the CEO of Google.
If I was Pichai, I would not have made the same decision, because of the interest of the company and maintaining good working environment for all the other employees. I could have treated the matter in a neutral manner and take the Damore’s idea into consideration. This is because when dealing with multicultural parties, sometimes diversified ideas may arise and hence causing commotion of ideas which firing may not be the solution.
It is ethical for an organization to fire an employee in an ethical manner when an employee tries to express beliefs that do not align with the overall culture because, organizational culture plays a very key role in the success of the organization and therefore, any attempt to bring any culture from outside the aligned one might lead to the organization facing challenges which might affect its productivity. In addition, culture helps in shaping the employees attitude towards performance and therefore, in case the employee goes against the aligned culture an organization might have a reason for firing such an employee due to the fact that the employees attitude might be affected by the beliefs of the employee which does not align with the overall culture of an organization. To add on that, culture gives an organization the direction to follow and any attempt for an employee to express belief that is contrary to the overall organizational culture might affect the organization in achieving its vision and objectives therefore, it is ethical to fire an employee in such case.
