Pete the Cat Theme Literacy Bag
Developmental Age 3 to 4 years old.
This literacy bag will be part of the Pete the Cat collection. Each month will be a different theme of Pete the Cat books. Inside the bookbag the parents and the children will find a copy of the Pete the Cat book along with crayons, puzzles, finger puppet of Pete the Cat along with the items that are in the book. Like for example the book " I love my white shoes will have white copies of shoes and the child will change the color of the shoes to match whatever Pete gets into. Cutouts of Pete along with some of the items in the book, glue sticks, and construction paper. I would have other smaller books on the theme as well like in this bag books on colors.

Developmentally Appropriate Literature The authors of these books are James Dean and Eric Litwin. "Rocking in my school shoes''," His Groovy Buttons'', and Groovy Guide to Life".
Questions
1. Rocking in my school Shoes. What are some things that Pete was doing in his school shoes? What color was Pete's school shoes? Where was Pete going? Where was some places Pete was going while in school? Which one is your favorite?
2. Pete the Cat and His four groovy Buttons. What color was Pete's coat? How many buttons were on it? Can you name the colors? When he lost one button how many do you think he had left?
3. Pete the Cat groovy Guide to Life. What is your favorite quote in the book? Why is it your favorite? Which quote did you not like? Why?
Reading Activities
1. The book I love my white shoes. The teacher could have the children to point out things in the classroom that are the same color as the shoes that Pete change to on every page.
2. The Pete the Cat Book on Groovy Guide. The teacher could have the children to draw a picture of their favorite part of the book and share with the class why it's their favorite.
3. The Pete the Cat Book on his groovy buttons. The teacher could have the children cut out the button cutouts and color each one the color of the buttons in the story.
Language Activities
1. Have the children to draw a picture of their favorite part in any book and explain to the class why it's their favorite.
2. The teacher could use flash cards with the names of colors on it and the children can try and match the color to the name.
3. The teacher could ask each child to come up and talk about what is going on in a particular page in any book.
Manipulative Items
1. Inside the bag for that theme month the teacher could have a Pete finger puppet. This could be used for the children to act out the book and the character.
2. The bag could have big puzzle cutouts where it's Pete with his coat but the children have to try and put his coat buttons on him.
3. There could be some small figurines from each book inside the bag and the children can act out the book for family or classmates.
