Confession of a Juggle

In ‘confession of a juggle’ author Fey asserts that she is okay with one child and that

getting pregnant will prevent her from meeting her work ambition in her working life. I

disagree with Fey main argument that she is not going to give birth to another baby because

pregnancy does not cost a lifetime but a matter of nine months only. Children are the source

of happiness and so I disagree with Fey that she does not want other children and instead she

wants to concentrate on her working life.

The author has centralized her argument on the basis of the commitments her dream

job requires. In a very ironical sense, the child implies that having a working mum is not

appealing at all because they command people around and that they can’t have enough time

for the family and so ignores giving birth to her baby sister. Fey do not like being asked a

question concerning how she lives with only one kind and whether she still likes to give birth

to another child. And considering her age that she is nearly leaving for retirement, Fey argues

that such kind of questions is very annoying to a person like her who is almost attaining

menopause. In Fey work, many people give her suggestions and testimonials on how they

made it and gave birth to children at their later stages of menopause that is forty-one and

forty-two years. Her mother even tells Fey that she gave birth to her at the age of thirty-nine.

This baby and working life are what disturbs everyone in the society where the author lives

because many people are advising her to give birth to more children. (Fey)

Fey had speculated that giving birth to only one child will be fashionable in New

York but she later realizes the opposite since a person who had more children and was able to

raise them and take them to beautiful schools was a status symbol that they were financially

stable. The author suggests that raising one child is easy and that the child will receive the

best from the parents.(Fey)

Fey had been advised by her mom never to ask questions about other persons’

reproductive plans and that is the reason why she has not taken advice from the other people

on giving birth to another child. Fey worry of not getting pregnant is that she does not want to

prove that she is capable of giving birth to a baby. That like the ‘Greeks Greeks’ who wanted

to prove that they could afford a cake she did not want to do that.(Fey)

I disagree with Fey that giving birth at her age of almost attaining menopause is not

the right time. According to me, giving birth should take place at any point in woman’s life

who has not lost fertility because of age, (Brandt & Nielsen, 25-36). Having one child does

not satisfy every member of the family because the only child will need siblings who can

provide company and most importantly play together.

I think giving birth to children by working moms do not affect much of their dream

jobs. This is because nine months of pregnancy is not a long period of time and that getting

pregnant does not mean that the organization will shut down, (Soules, 56-67). I think the

several families depended on making a living in the organization will continue to work.

Raising two children is not a hard task for employed persons like Fey and so I think the

author should consider getting pregnant and give birth to another child so that she may realize

the joy brought by the baby to the family.
