Date:

The following list details all of the components for your Research Paper Project. You will be posting all items on mywritinglab as instructed in class -- all items must be turned in to receive full credit for the project. Please note: be sure to make copies of all outside sources used as you are doing your research by cutting and pasting the sources in Word documents OR save your sources as PDF files; if you create Word document files for your sources it is important for you to include the bibliographical information for the journal article so you can complete your Works Cited page; you will use the HCC online databases to obtain the journal articles and most of these databases include the option of a PDF file download; the quotes you use in your paper will be highlighted on all copies of your outside sources (secondary sources) and turned in with the final draft of your research paper. All work must be typed utilizing MLA style. Please note: you do not need to make copies of the quotes you use from the primary sources (the two stories you have chosen from the approved research paper reading list—see below).

*Please note: items marked in ‘blue’ are required.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH PAPER TOPIC (10 PTS):__________

Type out your general research paper topic/introduction paragraph {50-75 typed words} -- indicate which two stories (see story choice list below) you will be comparing and the general approach to the outsider theme. Provide the full names of the authors, the full titles of the works, and the names of the two characters you will be comparing in your essay. You also need to state in one to two sentences how each of your chosen characters is an outsider, outcast, or misfit. Use third person for this component. [refer to and follow the sample preliminary topic hand-out I have posted on the MyWritingLab website in the document sharing list—to access the document sharing list, log onto mywritinglab; then click on ‘student tools’; then click on ‘document sharing’; then scroll down the list to view the pertinent documents] *This preliminary topic will become your introduction paragraph.

· Story Choices:

Sherwood Anderson’s “Hands”

Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral

William Faulkner’s "A Rose for Emily"

Langston Hughes’s “Salvation”

Flannery O'Connor’s "A Good Man is Hard to Find"

Eudora Welty’s "A Worn Path"

OUTLINE (10 PTS): *This component will NOT be submitted in the Summer/2021 semester due to the shortened length of the semester. Nonetheless, you should make sure to review the sample research paper outline posted in the document sharing list in mywritinglab as you work on your research project.

Type a general outline of your research paper – (see pgs. 638-640-formal outline information in LBH 11th edition); (see pgs. 642-643 for creation of outline instructions and pgs. 692- 693 in The Little, Brown Handbook 10th edition for a sample outline). Also refer to the instructor provided hand-out for general suggestions on how to organize your essay [this sample handout is posted on the MyWritingLab website in the document sharing list]. You may also access information about outlines at the Owl at Purdue website. The outline should include a thesis at the top which indicates the main focus of your paper.

Length {1 1/2 - 3 typed pages}

WORKS CITED PAGE (10 PTS): __________

This document will consist of all six of your sources for the research paper. Refer to the sample Works Cited documents posted in the document sharing list in mywritinglab.

NOTE CARDS (30 PTS.): *This component will NOT be submitted in the Summer/2021 semester due to the shortened length of the semester. Nonetheless, you should make sure to review the sample research paper notecards posted in the document sharing list in mywritinglab as you work on your research project.

You need to prepare a total of 15-20 notecard entries typed in a Word document -- (see pgs. 560 in LBH 11th edition); (see pg.621 in The Little, Brown Reader 10th edition for a sample notecard). Also refer to the instructor provided hand-outs (sample research paper Notecards) [these 2 sample handouts are posted on the MyWritingLab website-please note that one of the sample notecards is for an online dictionary source and the other sample is a notecard for a short story quote]. These note entries will be used to complete the rough draft and final draft of your research paper. You may have more than 15-20 notecards, but you must turn in a minimum of 15 entries to receive the 30 points towards your research paper grade. You must obtain one quote from the dictionary; 4 quotes from each of your two chosen stories; and 2 quotes from each of your 3 scholarly journal articles]

ROUGH DRAFT RESEARCH PAPER (90 PTS.): __________

The rough draft of your research paper must be typed utilizing MLA style and must include

a typed Works Cited page to receive full credit (Works Cited Page} needs to be compiled

utilizing MLA style (see pgs. 654,716-718,725 in LBH 11th edition); (see pgs. 720-724 and pg. 729 in The Little, Brown Handbook 10th edition for a sample Works Cited page). The length of this paper should be a minimum of 1, 000 typed words to receive the 90 points towards your research paper grade. This draft will be submitted to both tutoring services. Please note: the final draft of your research paper is 1,500-2,000 words so you may wish to complete a longer rough draft and have it reviewed by the tutors so you can make a better grade on the final draft. *Be sure to review the Quotes and Signal Phrases handout posted in mywritinglab to learn about “Signal phrases”, to help you introduce your direct quotes properly as you write your rough draft and incorporate your outside sources in your essay. This handbook also includes a detailed chapter on literary analysis entitled, “Reading and Writing about Literature” (Chapter 49). In addition, this handbook incorporates updated information related to the Internet and how to evaluate the usefulness of Internet sources. [If you do not have access to this handbook, do not worry. THE LITTLE, BROWN HANDBOOK 10th edition INFORMATION:

pgs. 558-730. This handbook also includes a detailed chapter on literary analysis entitled, “Reading and Writing about Literature” (Chapter 50).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Since this research paper will not be returned, you may wish to make a copy for yourself.

All work is due as specified on the E1302 course schedule of assignments handout posted at the top of the Canvas homepage. No late work will be accepted -- no exceptions. If you turn in the work on the assigned due date, you will receive full points for the research component due on that date (see above for the number of points allotted for each component). If you do not turn in the work, you will receive a zero for the component due on that date—no partial points will be awarded for late work. All work must be posted by the due dates/times in mywritinglab as instructed. In addition, you may NOT use your technology pass for any research components.

Be sure to allow yourself ample time to do research -- library time can be

extensive so plan your schedule accordingly. You may wish to change your topic more

than once based on your library research (as long as you keep me posted on the change via Canvas email) -- this is normal. Therefore, if your preliminary

research paper topic is different from your rough draft it is okay. The most important thing

to remember is to keep up with all of your work and make the due dates. These dates are

designed to spread the work out over a four week period in order to help you in this project.

Above all else, do not wait until the last minute -- research projects take lots of time and

effort.

If you should need help with any aspect of this project, feel free to contact me –

1) Canvas class email - {preferred method of contact}

2) HCC Email - [email protected] [emergency backup method if Canvas is not working]

3) Voice mail/phone (281)794-2079 [last resort contact method—I respond ‘much faster’ to Canvas email than a ‘voice mail’ message—please do NOT text me]
