Peer Review Instructions – Essay 1 Rough Draft Assignment

‘In Class’

Track Changes Instructions:

Open the essay 1 rough draft of your ‘instructor assigned’ partner and select “Tools”; then from the drop down menu select “Track Changes”.

{*If you are using Word 2007 or above, you need to click on “Review” and then click on “Track Changes” to activate the track changes feature; to use the insert comment feature, you need to click on “New Comment” to make the bubble appear on the right and type in comments}.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and type: “Peer Grader:” followed by your full name (Please note – when you type “Peer Grader: Student Name” it should be in a different color if you have successfully activated the Track Changes feature. If your newly typed information is not in another color, click on Tools, then Track Changes again to activate this feature). Scroll back to the top of the page and read the rough draft carefully from start to finish without typing any commentary. Then go back to the beginning of the document and begin making comments about the draft and proofread the document for errors in MLA format/grammar/tone/style.

You can insert comments by selecting “Insert”; then from the drop down menu select “Comment” – a dialogue bubble will appear on the right side of the page and you can type instructions to help your partner improve his or her work. These will be the same types of bubbles you read when you received your HCC Upswing Tutor marked drafts . You may also insert your ideas within the body of the essay by typing brackets; example:

One type of club I used to belong to had a unique type of language. [You should consider mentioning the name of the club in the previous sentence for more clarity.]

Proofreading Suggestions:

You need to remember the essay writing guideline/rules posted in MyWritingLab and be sure to alert your partner to any grammar concerns you see in the document. You also need to refer to the Essay 1 topic handout and be sure your partner is following the rules discussed there as well. You can also write out sentences or phrases for your partner as necessary in an effort to help strengthen your partner’s work. You should make several comments throughout the rough draft (at least two per paragraph) to show your partner how he or she can improve his or her essay 1 rough draft assignment.

Required Summary Comments:

Once you have thoroughly marked the rough draft, scroll to the bottom of the document and write the following under the “Peer Grader: Student Name” [write out your full name after ‘peer grader’]:

**Two full sentences describing the main constructive criticism you would like your partner to focus on (i.e. what does your partner need to work on to improve his or her work)

**Two full sentences describing the best aspects of your partner’s essay (i.e. what did your partner do best in his or her work)

File Saving Instructions:

After you have typed out your comments, click on “Save As” and change the name of the file as follows:

Partner’s Last Name space First Name space Essay space 1 space Peer space Review space by space your last name space 16799

(Example: Baker Anita Essay 1 Peer Review by Porter 16799)

Hit save and email your completed Peer Review to me (and copy your partner in the same message) as a Word attachment (use the Canvas email system). Please note: the subject line should be the filename + EOM

Helpful Reminders:

· Students usually benefit from this exercise and it is a great way for you to become more conscious of your own proofreading skills. You will also have a chance to work with someone else in the class and share ideas to enrich your experience.

· Remember that you are trying to help your partner make a better grade on this assignment so be sure to mark all items you recognize in the paper that need to be revised. You are also allowed to make ‘positive’ comments. Overall, be thorough in your comments to help your partner.

The bubbles look like this. When you are finished typing your comment, click back in the body of the paper.
