This assignment was developed with support of Bellevue College Provost Innovation Grant, which supports faculty developing curriculum enhanced with Virtual Reality or XR technology.

Purpose

This assignment features the ‘1,000 Cut Journey’, an immersive virtual reality experience in which the viewer becomes Michael Sterling, a black man, encountering racism as a young child, adolescent and young adult. The project is a collaboration between the Virtual Human Interaction Lab, led by Prof. Bailenson and the Cogburn Research Group, led by Dr. Courtney Cogburn, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at Columbia University’s School of Social Work. To understand the case, you will first watch a trailer of "1,000 Cut Journey", followed with news coverage from NBC, and then a TED talk given by Dr. Cogburn. 

Objectives

1. You will improve your skill with analytical writing, which leads to clear, organized emails you write at work, and facilitate with productive conversation you have with your team, your family members and relational partners. Please be specific with your description of examples and through proper citation, demonstrate your use of disciplinary specific language as much as possible.

2. Successful completion of this assignment demonstrates your learning of the course outcome, define ethnocentrism and bias and explain their influence on perception of self and others.

Although very short, the trailer reflects how the project was deeply rooted and situated within critical literature concerning racial identity. The experience started with "one day, you look into the mirror and you realize you've become Michael Sterling". This moment is immediately relevant to what Sheehy (1999) described as the "mirroring confrontations", where "struggles with self-definition, with class and race consciousness as both internalized and articulated, are themselves mirrors for the racialized American dialogue of identity (para. 3)".

Discussion postings are expected to be 500-800 words each. Discussion postings offer a "deeper dive" and learners can demonstrate higher-level of learning by comparing, analyzing and synthesizing from multiple cases or examples using the concept / theories introduced that week. Discussion postings are visible to the entire class. 

To demonstrate efforts of participation, learners will also provide either a self-reply to their posting (where they reflect upon the challenge and/or reward writing the posting) or a peer reply to someone else's posting in the same forum (where they share what they've learned from the posting). self-replies and peer replies are each 100 words or more.

 

· [Evaluation of on-line Postings] Each response will be evaluated using the category of "Content Development", "Sources and Evidence" and "Control of Syntax and Mechanics" from the VALUE rubrics, with the Capstone performance will receive 6 pt from Content Development, 2pt from Sources and Evidence and 2 pt from Control of Syntax and Mechanics.
